The D. Brent Pogue Collection will forever be remembered as the finest cabinet ever formed of early American coins, and it is fitting that the selection of the cents of 1793 is among the most important held privately. After all, it is with these issues that regular-issue United States coinage commenced, the first delivery of Chain cents being March 1, 1793.
One-cent coins have been struck continuously to the present time with the sole exception of 1815. They are the only denomination with such a complete history. The early large-format issues struck until 1857 have been front row center ever since coin collecting became popular in America in the mid-19th century. To know large cents is to love them, it has been said.
Our offering of the Pogue Collection cents begins in Part II of our series of sales with the issues of 1793, which are especially prized by collectors today. Included are three different types and five different die varieties, each in Mint State, mostly Gems. These stately coins are featured here. All told this offering will be remembered for years to come, as will the buyers whose names will eventually enter the numismatic record simply owning examples from this incredible offering.
