The American Numismatic Society Announces 2015 Gala Honorees

The American Numismatic Society is pleased to announce that on Thursday, January 8, 2015, the Society will honor longtime benefactors Elizabeth and Stanley DeForest Scott with the Trustees’ Award at the Annual Dinner Gala. The event will be held at The Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.

elizabethstanleyscottThe Scotts have been closely involved with the Society for many years as both generous donors and steadfast caretakers. Mr. Scott has been a member of the ANS since 1993, a life member since 2001, and an Augustus B. Sage Society member since 2006. He was elected to Fellow in 2003, when he also began serving on the Board of Trustees. He served for nine years, stepping down in 2012. During his tenure, he was instrumental in assisting with the sale of the ANS building at 140 William Street and the build-out to our current headquarters on Varick Street.

Past Gala Honorees of the Trustees’ Award include such notable numismatists as Ms. Shelby White and Mr. Leon Levy, Mr. Jamie Stewart, Mr. Kenneth L. Edlow, Mr. George Kolbe, Mr. Q. David Bowers, Mr. Chester L. Krause, Mr. Donald G. Patrick, Mr. Harvey Stack, Mr. Victor England, Jr., Mr. Ira Goldberg, Mr. Larry Goldberg, Mr. Harlan J. Berk, Mr. Roger S. Siboni, Mrs. Marian Scheuer Sofaer and the Honorable Abraham D. Sofaer.

Elizabeth Forbes Hazard Scott has served as an officer and trustee of numerous nonprofit organizations over the years, with a particular interest in groups involved in Anglo-American history (two of her grandparents were born in England) and international relations. Her interest in the field dates back to the days of World War II, when she encountered English children sent for safety to the United States and other English speaking countries. In the years after the war, working with the International Center in New York, she became particularly concerned with the welfare of young people who arrived in the U.S. after fleeing from countries swallowed up by the Soviet Union. Among the many, many other organizations she has served are Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation, Friends of Canterbury Cathedral in the U. S., the American-Scottish Foundation, Colonial Dames of America, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Friends of the Collections of Mount V ernon.

Stanley DeForest Scott has lived in the New York City area his entire life, as has his family for many generations. A real estate developer for decades, Mr. Scott is presently General Partner of 145 Hudson Street Associates and President of Hudson Square Management Corp. Formerly, he was General Manager of Alfred Scott Publishers and Chairman and President of S. D. Scott Printing Co., Inc. He shares, with his wife, a passionate interest in American history, the arts, and rare books, and he lists among his many associations –the Fraunces Tavern Museum, the J. Carter Brown Library, the Frick Collection, the Royal Academy of Arts, George Washington’s Mount Vernon, the American Museum in Britain, the New-York Historical Society, and The Grolier Club, to name just a few. Not surprisingly, his numismatic interests are similarly focused.

Although he has collected (and donated to the ANS) ancient Greek and Sicilian coins, his abiding love is for Colonial and American material. Among his past gifts to the ANS in this realm are a group of Carson City mint silver dollars of the 1880s, rare platinum proofs of the Fraunces Tavern Museum “Sons of the Revolution” bicentennial commemoration medal, and George Washington’s Farewell medals in platinum, gold, bronze,
and silver. Mr. Scott proudly notes that he had a hand in the design and striking of the medals, and that this involvement was the highlight of his career as an amateur numismatist.

Each year the Gala raises critical revenue for the American Numismatic Society, through ticket sales, program advertisements, sponsors, contributors, and the proceeds from a live auction. These funds are used to further the Society’s mission of supporting research and education in numismatics. We hope you will join us on January 8 when we pay tribute to this magnanimous couple. The evening promises to be particularly lively, with entertainment showcased by The Hot Sardines, “one of the best jazz bands in NY today,” according to Forbes magazine. According to the group themselves, “the Sardine sound—wartime Paris via New Orleans, or the other way around —is steeped in hot jazz, salty stride piano, and the kind of music Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt and Waller used to make: Straight-up, foot-stomping jazz. (Literally—the band includes a tap dancer whose feet count as two members of the rhythm section).”
