On October 3, 2016, the new 100- and 500-krona banknotes–together with new 1-, 2- and 5-krona coins–were introduced. This means that it is now possible to make payments using all of the new Swedish banknotes and coins, and that the work of collecting all the older banknotes and coins is continuing.
“It’s very exciting that all of banknotes and coins from the new banknote and coin series can now be used to make payments. By this point, I hope that everyone has learned to tilt the banknotes to check that they are genuine. It will be a huge challenge to collect all of the 2.5 billion kronor in coins that will become invalid next summer. In this regard, I expect that myntkartan.se will be useful for everybody who has a lot of coins,” says Governor of the Riksbank Stefan Ingves.
The current 100-krona and 500-krona banknotes–as well as all the older coins, apart from the 10-krona coin–will become invalid after June 30, 2017. Old and new banknotes and coins will therefore both be valid for a further nine months before being successively phased out. This means that it may take a while before you have the new banknotes and coins in your hand. A large part of the banknote and coin changeover will take place via the retail trade, but to make returning coins easier for people who have a lot of coins, the Riksbank has set up the website myntkartan.se, which shows the closest location where coins can be deposited.
A press conference with Governor Ingves and Mårten Gomer, Technical Expert, was held at 9:30 am on October 3 at the Riksbank. The press conference was broadcast live on the Riksbank’s website, www.riksbank.se, where it will also be available to view afterwards.
Then, between 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm, the general public came to the Riksbank at Brunkebergstorg 11 to exchange money for a new 100-krona banknote and a selection of coins worth 20 kronor. They also visited a special one-day-only exhibition on the new banknotes and coins.
