CoinWeek Coin Designer’s Profile: Charles L. Vickers

Charles L. Vickers is a sculptor-engraver who worked for the United States Mint from 2003 through 2016, creating medals, coins and coin designs. His varied career began in the United States Army, where he served from 1957 through 1959 on a tour of duty with the 101st Airborne Division. Following his military service, Vickers studied at the Arts Students League and Frank Reikky School of Art, both in New York City.

He moved to Pennsylvania in 1976 to join the Franklin Mint in Philadelphia, where Vickers enjoyed a meteoric rise to the position of senior sculptor. He left the Franklin Mint in 1985 and established his own studio, a venture that provided many opportunities for Vickers, who established himself as a premier artist on the international level.

In 2001, Vickers was chosen to design President George W. Bush’s inaugural medal. This prominent commission and his impressive portfolio, which also includes the official christening medal for USS Ronald Reagan and the Pope John Paul II 25th Anniversary Medal, helped Vickers land his engraving role with the United States Mint in December 2003 at the age of 66.

Vickers retired from an active role at the Mint on March 31, 2016.
