ANA Board Approves Balanced Operating Budget

Motion restores funding for Money Museum’s “History of Money” exhibit

The American Numismatic Association Board of Governors has unanimously approved a balanced operating budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year.

The budget, announced during the board’s Oct. 14 open session at the fall National Money ShowSM in Pittsburgh, proposes $5,966,329.44 in expenses while projecting revenues of $5,966,833.54 – a surplus of $504.10.

The budget was amended to add $22,500 to fund the “History of Money” exhibit, a permanent display that will fill in the Edward C. Rochette Money Museum’s lower gallery.

“This will allow museum staff to open the exhibit, which will describe media of exchange from the earliest coinage to modern money,” ANA President Tom Hallenbeck said. “It will be an interactive exhibit geared toward young people.”

ANA Governor Clifford Mishler said the Association will pursue sponsorships and donations to fund this exhibit, in order to keep the budget balanced.

Executive Director Search

The Board appointed a search committee for a new ANA executive director. Committee members include Tom Hallenbeck, Walter Ostromecki and Wendell Wolka. In coming weeks, the Board will announce other ANA members who will be part of the committee.

Increased Oversight

The Board passed several revisions to the association bylaws and policy manual.

The most significant changes increased Board oversight of ANA daily operations. For instance, the entire Board must now review and approve all contracts over $25,000 as well as any changes to the policy manual.

Most changes corrected minor verbiage errors or fleshed out ANA policies, such as establishing criteria for free clubs table at shows. Changes to the bylaws and policy manual will be presented online in the coming weeks.

“Both the bylaws and the policy manual should be living, breathing documents,” Hallenbeck said.


The Board voted unanimously to allow the Board secretary to serve concurrently as ANA historian. After the vote, David Sklow was nominated and approved as historian.

“Our current secretary David Sklow originally asked to be historian, and there was no good reason to not let him serve in both capacities. In fact, it will be beneficial to the Board, as he can provide historical background on issues we discuss,” Hallenbeck said.

The Board voted to appoint Catherine Bullowa as Honorary Host Chairman for the 2012 World’s Fair of MoneySM in Philadelphia. Mark Wieclaw was named Host Chairman for the 2013 World’s Fair of Money in Chicago.

In other business, the Board discussed and received member feedback on a variety of topics including the cost of World’s Fair of Money banquet tickets, the ANA’s early bird badge policy, the prize given to Farran Zerbe Memorial Award winners, and other topics.
