Awards given for Member Volunteer Challenge and Club Trivia Challenge
Hobbyists across North America celebrated 2014 National Coin Week, April 20-26, with the theme “Coin & Country: Celebrating Civic Service.” Activities and promotional materials celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half-dollar and President John F. Kennedy’s famous call to civic and community service: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”
ANA member Charles Corrado is the grand prize winner in the ANA Member Volunteer Challenge. Corrado won a 2014 American Eagle quarter ounce proof coin for documenting his efforts volunteering with the environmental organization “Friends of the San Pedro River” (www.sanpedroriver.org). Second prize, a 2014 Civil Rights Act of 1964 proof silver dollar and 2014 America the Beautiful Quarters proof set, was awarded to Jenna Van Valen for her volunteer work at St. Mary’s Home for Boys (www.stmaryshomeforboys.org) in Oregon. Third prize, a 1996 National Community Service proof silver dollar and 2014 quarters proof set, went to Ernest DiMeglio for his efforts in helping visually impaired veterans at a Veteran Affairs Clinic in New Jersey. The Glendale Coin Club is the grand prize winner in the annual National Coin Week Club Trivia Challenge. The club received a 1981 Willa Cather American Arts Commemorative Series half ounce gold medal. Second prize, a 2014 Civil Rights Act of 1964 proof silver dollar and 50 ANA Club Bucks, went to the Niagara Frontier Coin Club; and third prize, a 1996 National Community Service proof silver dollar and 25 ANA Club Bucks, went to the Central Arkansas Coin Club. A total of nine clubs earned a perfect score and prizes for the challenge; other perfect scores included the Colorado Springs Coin Club, the Eagle Rock Numismatic Society (Idaho), the Madison County (Alabama) Coin Club, the Milwaukee Numismatic Society, the Nashua Coin Club (New Hampshire) and the Tucson Coin Club.
More than 90 ANA member clubs from across the U.S. and Canada celebrated National Coin Week by setting up exhibits and open houses, and distributing educational and promotional materials about the hobby. The Reno Coin Club welcomed almost 300 people to an open house April 25 to celebrate National Coin Week, the club’s 30th anniversary and the 150th anniversary of the State of Nevada. The Monroe (MI) Coin Club, hometown of ANA founder Dr. George Heath, presented school programs to 1st and 3rd graders. Minnesota’s Northwest Coin Club created an impressive paper money display and educated visitors all week at a public library.
On April 26, the Edward C. Rochette Money Museum hosted an open house with free admission and welcomed more than 200 people to the event. There were coin-making demonstrations at the Mini-Mint where special 2014 National Coin Week tokens were given to visitors. Children dug for treasure in a pirate’s chest and spun a prize wheel for a variety of prizes. Hobo Nickel carver Adam Leech provided carving demonstrations. Juanita Barry and Amanda Dozier each won 30 seconds in the ANA Cash Cube, where they collected $40 and $23.
Every year during the third full week of April, the ANA and its members celebrate National Coin Week by letting others know about the joys of collecting and studying coins and other forms of money. 2015 National Coin Week will be held April 19-25.
