1883 Liberty Nickel Bag: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity – Heritage CSNS Auction

Heritage Auctions - Central States Numismatic Society - 1883 Liberty Nickel

Over the years, we have watched the Central States Numismatic Society (CSNS) grow into one of the most active and important numismatic organizations in the United States. The CSNS annual convention has blossomed into one of the premier numismatic venues of the year, and Heritage is proud to be the Official Auctioneer once again for the 79th annual event. This auction is scheduled for April 25-29 in Schaumburg, Illinois, with Platinum Night taking place starting at 6PM CT on Thursday, April 26.

This year, we have an especially strong contingent of Featured Collections:

  • The Barry F. Smith Collection, featuring a terrific year-and-mintmark set of copper, silver, and gold issues from 1854 that lacks only the ultra-rare 1854-S half eagle, along with an equally impressive, complete set of U.S. silver and gold classic commemoratives
  • The Star Mountain Collection, an eclectic, high-value collection ranging from Colonial issues to modern bullion, from patterns to regular issues, from proofs to fine circulation strikes, and from Territorials to U.S. type coins
  • The Estate of S. Gus and Louise Alexander, with early copper and silver type plus key date U.S. gold figuring prominently
  • The Collection of William Rau, including 253 lots, almost exclusively patterns including many important rarities, prominent in both Platinum Night and Floor Session 5
  • A selection of nine Mint State early half eagles from the McCoy Family Collection of U.S. Early Gold
  • The David Sunshine Collection, consisting entirely of California Fractional Gold coins
  • The Laguna Collection, a carefully assembled collection of late 19th and early-to-mid 20th century type
  • The Gotham City Collection, which focuses exclusively on gold in popular collector grades
  • The David Baptista Collection, a fine collection silver commemorative half dollars, as well as an extensive collection of related souvenirs, literature, original packaging, and related ephemera for many of the commemorative issues
  • The Estate of Terry Brand, Part VIII, consisting entirely of 1794 half dollar varieties
  • The Ostrow Error Collection, an interesting consignment of mint errors including several rare and unusual examples
  • The Maumee Valley Collection, debuting here and continuing in a series of weekly internet auctions. This auction features several early type issues in copper and silver, including early dollars and halves

This year’s auction includes a headline-making hoard of 1883 No Cents nickels — 297 pieces in all, all in Mint State. Tucked away in a canvas sack since 1889, the hoard made news in 2009 when it was purchased in a small New England auction. It is offered again here as Lot 4655 — intact with the original canvas sack, lacking just one nickel (which was possibly kept as a memento by a previous owner).

We also note an exceptional consignment from a longtime client that includes a remarkable series of rare Bryan dollars struck in silver (lots 4140-4154). Many are the finest-known and/or the finest certified, and all are beautiful to view.
