1902-O Barber Half Dollar - Stack's Bowers

Among the many significant highlights featured in Stack’s Bowers December 2017 Collectors Choice Online Auction is a beautiful MS-63 (PCGS) 1902-O Barber half dollar offered in lot 91218. This beautiful Choice Mint State example is mostly brilliant, with just a subtle dusting of apricot patina around the obverse border. Frosty luster blankets each side, and the fields are particularly satiny and smooth. Thin die breaks connect the peripheral design elements on the obverse, adding to the appeal of this attractive and desirable half dollar from the turn of the 20th century.

The 1902-O Barber half dollar is a semi-key date in the series and is a considerable condition rarity in Uncirculated grades. Though 2.5 million half dollars were struck in New Orleans, this amounted to just about half of the quantity struck in Philadelphia the same year. Most of these coins saw heavy circulation upon their release and are typically encountered in Extremely Fine and lower condition. Mint State examples are extremely scarce, with perhaps as few as 125 examples remaining in Uncirculated grades. The present MS-63 (PCGS) specimen ranks near the finer end of this limited census, with just 14 coins tied at the current grade and only 33 pieces listed finer on the PCGS Population Report.

Strong eye appeal and exceptional technical merit combine in this desirable example, and specialists in the Barber series will recognize this significant opportunity!

This delightful New Orleans specimen will be featured in lot 91218 our December 2017 Collectors Choice Online Auction alongside other rarities–including an 1868 Liberty Seated quarter graded MS-66+ (PCGS) CAC in lot 91172.
