Heritage Auctions – Red 1922 No D Lincoln Cent, Die Pair 2, Strong Reverse

1922 No D Lincoln Cent

Old-time collectors knew this issue simply as the “1922 Plain” cents, although the current terminology is 1922 No D Lincoln Cent

No cents were coined at the Philadelphia Mint in 1922, accounting for the great rarity of 1922-D cents with no visible mintmark, nor were any 1922 cents struck in San Francisco. Three Denver die pairs show this odd characteristic, yet Die Pair 2 is the one most-sought by specialists. An eroded and worn obverse die was heavily lapped to remove signs of die clashing — a process that eliminated the mintmark altogether — and then paired with a fresh reverse die.

Mint State examples are extremely rare of the die pairing, especially with the Red designation.

Our March 29-31 Dallas auction features a PCGS-graded MS63 Red example, apparently the second-finest 1922 No D Red cent known with the all-important Strong Reverse. PCGS reports a solitary MS64 Red example and none finer, while NGC lists no coins in Mint State Red with the Strong Reverse at all.

The Weak Reverse varieties are rare in Mint State Red as well, but the more-desirable Strong Reverse Die Pair 2 variety is exceedingly rare, with a total of only two coins graded.

The overall color is of this coin is light-red with some streaks of deep reddish-gray coloration, especially in the right obverse field. Scattered carbon-gray specks frequent the obverse, and there is also one J-shaped area of carbon above O in ONE on the reverse.
