Heritage Sells Nearly $17 million in New York Rare Coin Auctions

Heritage’s October-November New York rare coin auctions are now complete, with nearly $16.9 million in coins changing hands overall. As reported last week, the October 28 auction of the Eugene Gardner Collection, Part IV saw close to $5.9 million in overall sales from this single-consignor auction. The subsequent October 29-November 1 US Coins Signature auction saw over $11 million in lots hammer to new bidders. All prices include a 17.5% Buyer’s Premium.

1907_20_hr_cac_n66_haOutstanding examples of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 efforts to beautify American coinage highlighted this auction. A 1907 High Relief double eagle with Wire Rim, MS66 NGC, brought top honors, selling for $71,675. The Wire Rim, then known as a “fin”, around the circumference of the coin was considered a defect at the time of manufacture. Steps were taken to correct the problem, resulting in the Flat Rim variety, which is often separately collected. The eagle was also redesigned in 1907, and a small number of coins with Saint-Gaudens’ Indian Head design – also with a Wire Rim – were made as presentation pieces. These pieces, technically patterns, are highly sought-after today, and one such coin, graded MS65 by PCGS, sold for $67,562.50 in our New York auction.

A Sommer Islands sixpence, small portholes variety, graded AU50 by NGC, shared second honors when it sold for $70,500. This example is the finest reported of this type, with the next finest an XF40 example certified by PCGS. The Sommer Islands are known as Bermuda today, and their 1615-16 coinage, popularly known as “Hogge money” is highly sought-after by collectors of US colonial coins.

Also selling for $70,500 was a 1921 Missouri half dollar, at MS66+ the sole finest ever certified by PCGS. A visual treat, this coin is by a wide margin the highest valued Missouri half dollar Heritage has ever sold.
