1990 Silver Eagle, MS70 – The Sole Finest at PCGS – Registry Set Essential

1990 $1 Silver Eagle MS70 PCGS. A small decline in the price of silver in 1990 likely contributed to the slight increase over the previous two years in Silver Eagle purchases from the Mint. Proof sales also increased. The regular bullion-issue 1990 Silver eagle had a mintage of more than 5.8 million coins, and thousands are known in near-perfect MS69. Remarkably, however, only a single example has garnered the coveted MS70 grade at PCGS (11/15). That paramount Registry coin is offered in this lot. The strike is razor-sharp throughout, and the frosty, perfectly preserved surfaces are devoid of toning. The Silver Eagle series is one of the most heavily collected in modern issues, but Registry Set collectors will find many dates, including the 1990, where the acquisition of a finest-known example is almost impossible. We anticipate keen interest in this important offering.(Registry values: N991) (NGC ID# 26JC, PCGS# 9836)

PRICE REALIZED   $12,925 (includes Buyers Premium).

Editors Note: Until 2015  PCGS has certified NO 1990 silver eagles as MS-70, so this is the first opportunity to see how one performed in an open auction environment. What is interesting is that both the 1989 and 1992 PCGS MS-70 have the exact same POP, just one coin, and the PCGS Price guide lists both those coins has having a value of $22,000.  The 1990 has no listed value on the PCGS Price Guide.

1999 Silver Eagle, MS70 – The Ultimate Collector Grade

1999 $1 Silver Eagle MS70 NGC. The American Eagle gold and silver bullion coin program was started in 1986 to provide an option for investors in the United States to acquire a domestic product. Since then, they have become a collector’s item with considerable demand for the highest graded pieces such as this perfect MS70. The Set Registry programs have intensified the demand for these pieces. This example, one of 109 similarly graded pieces at NGC (11/15), exhibits frosty silver luster, bold design elements, and untoned obverse and reverse surfaces.(Registry values: N991) (NGC ID# 26JX, PCGS# 9947)

PRICE REALIZED   $11,750.00 (includes Buyers Premium).

Editors Note: PCGS has certified NO 1999 silver eagles as MS-70, and NGC has certified a total of 109 coins at this level. The previous CoinWeek value range guide for the date in NGC 70  was $17-19,000  PCGS has not price for the date/grade. Obviously the trend line from prior sales is downward for this date/grade

2000 Silver Eagle, MS70 – Millennium Set

2000 $1 Millennium Set Silver Eagle MS70 NGC. The 2000 Silver Eagle is elusive in perfectly preserved MS70, and the Millennium Set designation appears on only 23 such coins at NGC (11/15). This example is essentially brilliant save for a hint of light golden toning around the extreme outer peripheries. The strike is bold, and the eye appeal is excellent. (NGC ID# 26JZ, PCGS# 9969)

PRICE REALIZED   $11,750.00 (includes Buyers Premium).

Editors Note: PCGS has certified NO 1999 silver eagles as MS-70, and NGC has certified a total of 109 coins at this level. The previous CoinWeek value range guide for the date in NGC 70  was $17-19,000  PCGS has no price for the date/grade. Obviously the trend line from prior sales is downward for this date/grade

1996 Silver Eagle, MS70 – Better Date

1996 $1 Silver Eagle MS70 NGC. The 1996 is famously a better date, boasting the lowest mintage from the 1990s at barely more than 3.6 million coins. Perfectly preserved examples are scarce and, as with many other issues from this period, none are so-graded at PCGS. This NGC coin displays sharply struck design elements and frosty, untoned luster. An essential acquisition for the Registry collector.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 26JR, PCGS# 9900)

PRICE REALIZED   $5170.00 (includes Buyers Premium).

Editors Note: PCGS has certified NO 1996 silver eagles as MS-70, and NGC has certified a total of 168 coins at this level with 43 new coins (about 25% of the total) being certified in 2015. The previous CoinWeek value range guide for the date in NGC 70  was $$5500 to $6000  PCGS has no price for the date/grade and the NGC price guide lists the coin at $10,000.

This coin illustrates one reason why some of these scare low pop coins continue to fall in price. With so many uncertified examples in existence, and having a continue stream of new coins being made, it is almost impossible to create any price stability. For this date the top top increased by 25% in just one year.

We would expect to see continued downward pressure.

1994 Silver Eagle, MS70 – Lower-Mintage Issue

1994 $1 Silver Eagle MS70 NGC. The 1994 Silver Eagle had one of the lower mintages of this decade, totaling little more than 4.2 million pieces. Examples in MS70 are seldom seen and none are so-designated by PCGS. This NGC coin is fully rendered with frosty silver luster. A few hints of milky-gold toning are seen around the peripheries.(Registry values: N991) (NGC ID# 26JL, PCGS# 9876)

PRICE REALIZED   $4465.00 (includes Buyers Premium).

Editors Note: PCGS has certified NO 1994 silver eagles as MS-70, and NGC has certified a total of 202 coins with 50 new coins (about 25% of the total) being certified in 2015. The previous CoinWeek value range guide for the date in NGC 70  was $4000 to $5000  PCGS has no price for the date/grade and the NGC price guide lists the coin at $6,100.

It may be coincidence that the 94 and the 96 both had increases of @ 25% in the NGC MS-70 pop. We are going to see if we can find any pattern to the number of new coins being made which could indicate that the coins are slowly being “feed into the  market” in an orderly way. We’ll keep you informed.
