Finest 1905 $20 Gold Certificate could top $120,000 in Heritage CSNS Currency Auction

April 18-22  auction features more than 3,400 total lots of fine, rare and valuable currency to collectors at CSNS in Schaumberg, IL

Heritage Auctions, the official auctioneer of the Central States Numismatic Society Show, will offer more than 3,400 lots of rare and collectible currency as part of its Signature® Currency Auction being held April 18-20, in Schaumburg, Illinois and on April 22.

The lots will be offered in four floor sessions, along with one session presented online only. The Signature portion of the auction contains 1,800+ lots.

A wide variety of material will be offered during Session One of the auction, beginning at 6 p.m CT on Wednesday, April 18. The session will include World Currency, Canadian Currency, Continental and Colonial Notes, Fractional Currency, Encased Postage, Obsolete Notes, Confederate Notes, Miscellaneous, and Military Payment Certificates.

Among the Colonial highlights is a William Ellery Signed Rhode Island March 18, 1776 3s note graded PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20; Ellery was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. A number of rare notes are being offered during the Obsoletes portion of the auction, among them a Scarce Tallahassee, Florida Territory- Tallahassee Post Office $1 from the Hard Times Era, 1837-39.

Heritage will also offer one of each denomination from the first issue of Confederate Stock Certificates (also referred to as Bonds): $50, $100, $500 and $1000. They were part of a Feb. 28, 1861 authorization by the Provisional Confederate Congress to offer $15 million worth of 10 year stock certificates to raise money to fund the newly formed government.

Many collectors are eagerly anticipating the offering of National Bank Notes taking place during Session Two, Thursday, April 19 at 6 pm. CT. The exceptional offering includes a Serial Number 1 Oswego, KS – $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 467 from The First NB graded Extremely Fine 40 by PCGS, which carries an estimate of $30,000+. Original National Gold Bank Notes are collector favorites and the San Francisco, CA – $5 Fr. 1136 from The First National Gold Bank graded PCGS Very Fine 30PPQ (estimate: $25,000+) example should command considerable interest. An Oakdale, CA – $10 1902 Red Seal Fr. 613, The First NB graded PCGS Very Fine 30PPQ makes its auction debut and is anticipated to realize $20,000+.

Session Three, Friday, April 20 at 1 p.m. CT, contains Small-Size and Error notes and includes a number of important auction highlights, among them a Fr. 2231-B $10000 1934 Federal Reserve Note graded PMG Uncirculated 62 (estimate: $90,000+), formerly part of the Binion Hoard, which is being offered as part of the Dwane Johansen Collection. Other exceptional material from that session includes a Fr. 2210-H* $1000 1928 Federal Reserve Note graded PCGS Extremely Fine 45PPQ, estimated at $50,000+ and a Fr. 1700 $10 1933 Silver Certificate graded About Uncirculated 53 by PMG with a $15,000 pre-auction estimate.

Large Size Type Notes will be offered on Friday, April 20 at 6 p.m. CT during Session Four. A gorgeous Fr. 1179 $20 1905 Gold Certificate PMG Superb Gem Unc 67 EPQ becomes the finest third party graded Fr. 1179 to ever be auctioned and carries a $120,000+ estimate. A number of courtesy autographed notes, including a Low Serial Number H4 Carmi A. Thompson Courtesy Autographed Fr. 276 $5 1899 Silver Certificate graded PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ, estimated at $50,000+, will also cross the auction block during the same session.

More than 1,600 lots will be offered during the Internet Only portion of the auction, Session Five, which closes online at Heritage Live! on Sunday, April 22, beginning at 10 a.m. CT.

The more than 3,400 total auction lots will be available for viewing at CSNS in Schaumburg.
