High Denomination Notes Highlight Heritage ANA Currency Auction

Heritage ANA Currency Auction

Heritage’s ANA World’s Fair of MoneyPlatinum Night Currency  Auction, scheduled for the evening of August 15 at the Chicago ANA convention, features the crème de la crème of US currency. This year’s Platinum Night Platinum Night particularly emphasizes large denomination currency in both small size and large size formats.

A 1928 $5,000 Federal Reserve note from the Atlanta district is one of fewer than 20 known across all districts for this issue. This note has been certified by PMG as Very Fine 30, without qualifiers, and it also bears the coveted EPQ designation. The quality and originality of this note should bring substantial interest at this currency auction when the hammer falls. A Series 1934 $100 Federal Reserve note from the San Francisco district should attract a good deal of attention because of its serial number — it is in fact the sole serial number 1 $1,000 FRN outside of government hands. This note was not saved immediately, but spent some time in circulation, meriting a grade of Very Fine 25 from PMG, with minor restoration noted.

Large size Currency Auction offerings are led by a delightful Fr. 1216 $500 Gold Certificate, series 1882. This piece is new to the census, and at a PCGS-assigned About New 50 it stands as the finest known by ten grade points. A $1,000 gold certificate from series 1922, Fr. 1220, is also new to the census, graded Extremely Fine 40 by PCGS. It stands as one of the nicest examples of this issue available encapsulated as being problem-free.
