Highlights from the August Champion Hong Kong Auction

Champion Auctions 2017 Auction

By Champion Auction ……
On August 20, Champion Auctions will feature rare Chinese coins from the collection of French collector Charles E. Tanant at their latest Hong Kong auction. The sale will take place at the Hyatt Regency at 18 Hanoi Road.

Tanant, a former official at the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs Service, assembled his collection over the course of his 36-year career. It was during this time that Tanant assembled an excellent grouping of Chinese provincial coins from the late Imperial era as well as a number of pieces from the Republican period. These coins have been kept off of the market for more than 90 years; many were personal gifts from Tanant’s Customs Service colleagues.

According to Champion Auctions’ president Michael Chou, many of Tanant’s pieces are in the highest level of preservation. Chou’s opinion is backed by the graders at PCGS and NGC.
