Heritage Auctions‘ last all-encompassing Ancient & World Coins Signature auction of 2019 will be held September 4-9 in Long Beach in conjunction with the Long Beach Coin and Collectibles Expo.
The past 12 months have been a time of tremendous opportunity, with a diverse selection of material seen in some of our biggest auctions yet, as well as a number of important collections that can be considered of milestone importance to the numismatic world. Leading off the world coin auction is our incredible selection of ancients, which is brimming with truly something for everyone.
For the gold collectors, we have Roman Imperial solidi of Avitus and Petronius Maximus, as well as an early-issue Persian daric, Babylonian double-darics, a variety of Egyptian octodrachms and Byzantine solidi from Philippicus and both styles of facing Christ portraits from Justinian II.
Greek collectors will want to pay special attention to the Syracusan offerings, which boasts an array of breathtaking gold and silver issues spanning 275 years. Once againpm World Coins, a rich selection of Brazilian gold coinage is also present in the auction. The majority hails from the revered Santa Cruz collection, and spans a widely inclusive array of dates, mints, and denominations, starting from the late 17th century and continuing all the way to the Republic issues of the 20th century.
More widely, Latin America world coins offers a generous sampling of varied delights. Some of our favorites are an impressive and very rare near-choice Cuban 20 Pesos of 1915, as well as a Spanish Philip V 8 Escudos dated 1728, certified XF45 by NGC. In addition to the countless other engaging examples in this realm, a Colombian “Cundinamarca” 8 Reales, dated 1821, notably ties for the finest certified representative of its type to-date.

From Africa, we find an astounding MS67-graded Ethiopian Pattern Birr, EE 1892 (1899). From Asia, a PCGS-certified example of the famed Chinese Kweichow “Auto” Dollar. From Europe, hammered gold (such as a grand French Philippe VI Double Royal d’or, as well as a superb selection of English hammered penny rarities dating to the medieval period.
