In 1191, Duke Leopold V of Austria and King Richard ‘The Lionheart’ of England got into an argument during the capture of the city of Acre. In December 1192, returning from the Holy Land, Richard was taken prisoner by Leopold on the outskirts of Vienna. The huge ransom, which Leopold extorted from the English people in return for Richard’s release, led to the origin of the legend of Robin Hood. Leopold used the Silver to found both the stronghold of Wiener Neustadt and the original mint in Vienna.
This second release focuses on Wiener Neustadt, which Leopold established to house Richard, who was previously held at Durnstein Castle. Since then, it has been the backdrop for numerous important historical events.
The Silver coin portrays the original Burg Wiener Neustadt, the city’s first castle and now home to one of the world’s oldest military academies, the Theresian Military Academy, established by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria in 1752. The obverse displays a crusader on horseback along with the year, weight and face value. This design is standard across this three-coin series.
