Boaty McBoatface’s Adventure Continues With New 50p Coin From Pobjoy Mint

In 2016 the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) launched a campaign to find a name for the UK’s new polar research ship. The nation’s imagination was truly captured by the playful suggestion of Boaty McBoatface. Although not quite fitting for the state-of-the-art research ship, the popularity of ‘Boaty’ could not be ignored. Today the National Oceanography Centre’s Autosub Long Range autonomous vehicle proudly carries the name.

Launched from the decks of RRS Sir David Attenborough, Boaty will travel thousands of kilometers beneath the polar oceans, helping oceanographers investigate melting ice and other changes in Antarctica and the Arctic. Commissioned by NERC, built by Cammell Laird for operation by British Antarctic Survey, Sir David Attenborough was officially named at a special ceremony at the shipyard on September 26, 2019.

To mark this very special occasion, Pobjoy Mint is excited to announce the release of a brand new 50p coin. Pobjoy Mint is especially proud that a special Silver version of the Boaty McBoatface 50p will be presented to the iconic English broadcaster and natural historian Sir David Attenborough at the naming ceremony.

Boaty McBoatface will be carried on the research vessel Sir David Attenborough and will be undertaking scientific research. The findings will be sent back to scientists aboard the research vessel and on land. The AUV is able to travel on its own under water and ice, reaching depths of 6,000 m and with a range of up to 6,000 km.

The design on the coin shows Boaty McBoatface being lowered down into the sea from the research ship Sir David Attenborough, which has the name inscribed on the side of the vessel. The background shows an iceberg and the Antarctic landscape.

The Pobjoy Mint effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is shown on the obverse of the coin. The coin is available in Cupro Nickel Diamond Finish with Boaty McBoatface being portrayed in color. The coin will be presented in a stunning, specially designed color pack featuring pictures of Boaty and RSS Sir David Attenborough.
