Does the Mint have another sellout on their hands?

With the sellout of the 2015 America the Beautiful Quarters Blue Ridge Parkway 5 oz. silver bullion coin on June 22 (a temporary situation; sales are about to resume Monday, July 13), no one can be blamed for speculating on the retail fate of its partner in the series, the uncirculated 2015 Blue Ridge Parkway 5 oz. silver coin (product code SN3).

Add to that the recent sellouts of the Jacqueline Kennedy First Spouse 1/2 oz. gold Proof and uncirculated coins and the Harry S. Truman Coin & Chronicles Set, and suddenly a run on the coin seems possible.

As of 1:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (and one hour after it went on sale), the $149.95 coin is still available for purchase.

About the Coin

Each 2015 America the Beautiful Quarters Blue Ridge Parkway 5 oz. silver uncirculated coin consists of five ounces of .999 fine silver and bear the “P” mint mark to signify its production in Philadelphia. The reverse was designed by Memphis-based artist Frank Morris and engraved by Joseph Menna.

A 30,000 maximum mintage has been allotted to the uncirculated coin, out of a total limit of 65,000 for both the uncirculated and bullion versions. When the bullion coin sold out in June, it had already reached its 35,000 maximum production number.

The United States Mint, however, is authorized to manufacture more of either coin as long as the total does not exceed 65,000, so with sales of the bullion coin resuming on Monday, this means that the final tally of silver uncirculated coins produced will be fewer than 30,000.

The next coin in the series, the 2015 Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge 5 oz. silver uncirculated coin, is due in October, while the fifth and final 2015 America the Beautiful quarter–the Saratoga National Historical Park 5 oz. silver uncirculated coin–is due in December. Depending on how they fare, the uncirculated silver Blue Ridge Parkway coin may come to have one of the lower mintages of the program.

CoinWeek will continue to follow the story as it develops.
