Holiday-themed Elephant coins also available
In 1999, the Bavarian State Mint, known locally as Das Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt Mint, first manufactured Gold and Silver Elephant coins in the African Wildlife series under the legend of Zambia. In 2004, the country of issue changed to the Somali Republic, a coastal nation on the Horn of Africa. Despite this slight change, the popularity of the series never diminished.
“African Elephant coins have bene popular since their first release, in part for their depiction of one of the most majestic animals on the planet,” APMEX COO Mark Yoshimura said. “This series is valued for its unique designs and high metal content options. We are pleased to carry a variety of options, both in metal type and unique packaging, to provide a wide range of shopping opportunities for our customers.”
The 2018 Gold and Silver Elephant coins depict the Somali Coat of Arms, showing two leopards supporting a shield with a five-pointed star with a ribbon draped over two crossed lances and two crossed palm fronds below. As with many popular world coin series, the reverse design changes each year. The 2018 coins feature a close-up view of an adult elephant with its trunk reaching toward the edge of the coin. In the background are two birds in flight and a leafless tree.
African Elephant coins are popular with both investors and collectors, in part due to their wide range of purchasing options. The .9999 fine Silver coins come in sizes ranging from 1/10 oz up to 1 kilo. The .9999 fine Gold coins come as small as 1/2 gram to the popular 1 oz size. Additionally, 1 oz Gold and Silver Elephant coins come in a variety of MintDirect® packaging options for more discerning collectors. APMEX even offers colorized sets and unique holiday packaging.
