Isle of Man 2015 Christmas Angel 1/20 Ounce Gold Proof Coin

Since medieval times, Angel coins bearing the design of the Archangel Michael slaying the Dragon have been thought to bring good luck and health to the bearer and this modern Angel, which is one of the World’s foremost bullion coins, continues to uphold this remarkable tradition. – The Pobjoy Mint.

For the last 12 years, the Isle of Man Treasury has issued a special 1/20 ounce .9999 Gold Angel bullion coin bearing a special Privy Mark on its reverse to reflect a Christmas theme. This year, to mark the occasion, the Isle of Man has issued a limited minting of 1,000 1/20 ounce gold coins bearing a drum. The motif recalls the 12 drummers drumming from the timeless song, the 12 Days of Christmas.

This elegant proof coin has a shows a deep contrast between the detailed relief and the coin’s mirrored finish and has been approved by Buckingham Palace. The coin’s obverse bears Ian Rank-Broadley’s iconic effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

The 1/20 ounce .9999 Gold Angel bullion coin can be purchased directly from the Pobjoy Mint or wherever modern world bullion coins are sold.

 


Obverse:

Ian Rank-Broadley’s classic effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Rank-Bradley’s initials IRB are located just beneath the bust truncation. Wrapping around the coin, just inside of the rim, are the inscriptions ELIZABETH II and ISLE OF MAN 2015. Before each of these inscriptions is the embowed three-legged symbol from the Isle of Man Coat of Arms. Wrapping around the rim are rectangular denticles.

Reverse:

The obverse features a representation of the Archangel Michael. In his right hand a spear. In his left hand, a shield emblazoned with a cross. Wings adorn Michael’s back and a halo hover over his head. Michael’s spear is penetrating the neck of a dragon. Above the dragon’s head is a privy mark of a drum, two drum sticks, and the number “12”. The left of the dragon’s wing is the initials “PM” of the Pobjoy Mint. Beneath the dragon are the following inscriptions: Au. 999.9, 1/20 OUNCE, ANGEL. A circular border of chain link surrounds the design.

Designer(s): Since 1998, Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth has served with distinction as the obverse for coins of the UK and the Commonwealth.  View Designer’s Profile.
