The Royal Mint 2016 Britannia Bullion Range

2016sovereign

The Royal Mint has launched its Britannia 2016 999.9 fine gold and 999 fine silver coins for 2016. This 2016 issue features the fifth definitive portrait of Her Majesty The Queen by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark for the first time, heralding a new chapter in The Royal Mint’s Britannia bullion story. The reverse will continue to feature the classic Britannia design by Philip Nathan.

The launch follows what has been a significant year for the Britannia bullion range. Worldwide demand for silver coins in general has seen The Royal Mint Silver 1oz Britannia experience an extraordinary spike in demand with sales increasing by 600% year on year. Furthermore, the introduction of fractional gold Britannia coins in December 2014 has increased the choice for customers looking for a more easily divisible portfolio.

Chris Howard, The Royal Mint’s Director of Bullion, said, “This is an exciting time for The Royal Mint, as bullion products such as the Britannia fractional coins and the launch of www.royalmintbullion.com have made bullion coins even more accessible for those looking to enter the precious metals market. The fact that all UK coins are capital gains tax free for UK residents, and the gold coins are Capital Gains Tax free, continues to appeal.”

The availability of the Britannia range on The Royal Mint’s trading website www.royalmintbullion.com has proved exceptionally popular, giving customers the opportunity of buying, storing and selling The Royal Mint’s bullion coins quickly and securely, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Vault, The Royal Mint’s on-site storage facility guarded by the Ministry of Defence Police, has also proved popular with bullion buyers looking for a highly secure storage option.

Britannia – The Background

Britannia, the female representation of Britain, has a long history on British coinage. She is the embodiment of the nation she has represented for almost 2,000 years, ever since the Romans invaded the isles and claimed them as the province of Britannia. She first appeared on the Roman coins of Emperor Hadrian circa 119 CE and was introduced to British coinage by Charles II in 1672.

The Range

The 2016 Britannia range offers a choice of 999.9 fine gold and 999 fine silver coins, packaged in tubes or available individually in credit-card-sized sealed protective single packaging.

The Royal Mint has an unbroken history of minting British coinage dating back over 1,100 years. Based in the Tower of London for over 500 years, by 1812 the Mint had moved out of the Tower to premises on Tower Hill in London. In 1967, the building of a new Royal Mint began on its current site in South Wales, UK, to accommodate the minting of UK decimal coinage. Today, the Mint is the world’s largest export mint, supplying coins to the UK and overseas countries.
