Pobjoy Mint is excited to announce the release of a brand new 50p to mark the Bicentennial of Queen Victoria featuring the Royal British Coat of Arms of this much loved monarch. Also known as the Royal Arms, they can be traced back to the first arms of the Kings of England and Scotland. Various alterations occurred over the years as the monarchs changed or other realms were acquired.
Born on May 24, 1819, at Kensington Palace in London, Queen Victoria was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from June 20, 1837 until her death on January 22, 1901. Her reign of 63 years and seven months was longer than that of any of her predecessors and was known as the Victorian Era.
The accession of Queen Victoria ended the personal union between the United Kingdom and Hanover, as Salic law prevented women from ascending the Hanoverian throne. The Escutcheon of Hanover was removed and the Royal Arms remained the same. There was no attempt to alter the Royal Arms to reflect later titles acquired by the British monarch such as Emperor of India. The harp of the United Kingdom of Ireland remained despite the partition in 1921, to represent Northern Ireland.
The members of the Royal Family are granted their own personal arms that are based on the Royal Arms. Only children and grandchildren in the male line of the monarch are entitled to arms in this fashion.
The design features the official Coat of Arms of Queen Victoria. The value ‘50’ is shown at the base of the design. The obverse of the coin features the exclusive Pobjoy Mint effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The new 50 pence coin will be produced in Cupro Nickel Diamond Finish and Proof Sterling Silver Piedfort.
