Celebrate the World’s Olympians with Coins Commemorating the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics

Pobjoy Mint is delighted to announce the release of a series of four coins on behalf of the British Virgin Islands. The Tokyo Summer Olympics were awarded to Tokyo in September 2013 and will take place from July 24 to August 9, 2020. The designs of the coins feature two established sporting events and two events that will appear at the Olympics for the first time in 2020.

  • Designs illustrate four sports taking place at the 2020 Summer Olympics
  • Coins are available with the Japanese themed borders in color
  • Silver versions produced in high-quality proof finish
  • Available individually and as a four-coin set

Over six million phones were recycled to produce the official Tokyo Summer Olympics medals. Each design features a border that includes symbols traditionally associated with Japan-cherry blossom, Koi carp, and fans.

Tokyo Summer Olympics coins from the Pobjoy Mint

The Equestrian event made its debut in the 1900 games but then disappeared until 1912. However, the event has been included in all summer games since then. The design on the coin features an Equestrian showjumper jumping a fence in the foreground with a Buddha in the background.

Kayaking has featured in the Summer Olympics since 1936 and the design focuses on the men’s double kayak and shows them negotiating the white water. The famous image of Mount Fuji appears in the background.

Surfing will make its appearance for the first time at the Tokyo Summer Olympics. The design on the coin shows a surfer negotiating a barrel ride where they surf inside a breaking wave in the foreground. The famous Sensoji Temple is shown in the background.

The final Tokyo Summer Olympics design features another new event being skateboarding for the 2020 Olympics. The design itself features a skateboarder during “air time” above a half pipe in the foreground. The high-speed train known as the bullet train can be seen in the background.

The coins are available in Uncirculated Cupro Nickel and Proof Sterling Silver and each beautifully engineered precious metal coin has been struck four times to produce the superlative Pobjoy proof finish. All coins are available with the Japanese themed border beautifully colored.
