Story
In past years, the summits of our planet’s most famous mountains have already adorned some coins in CIT’s popular “Mountains and Flora” series. At the 2016 coin fair of the American Numismatic Association (ANA), CIT presented “The 7 Summits”, a new and exclusive limited-edition series dedicated to the world’s seven most spectacular summits.
Minted from five ounces of fine silver, the series’ second issue features its highest summit at 8,848 meters. Located in the Himalayas on the border between China and Nepal, and Tibet on the plateau, Mount Everest is also known as “Holy Mountain” or “Holy Mother (of the universe)”. Probably the most famous eight-thousander, Mount Everest – which is in fact a collection of several individual peaks – received its official name in 1856 by British surveyor George Everest.
The first ascent of the mountain, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site today, was completed by Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa Tensing Norgay on May 29, 1953. 25 years later, Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler made the first ascent without supplemental oxygen.
“The 7 Summits – Mount Everest” features a breathtakingly detailed topographic relief thanks to Smartminting©. It depicts the terrain of the peak, which continues to be one of the greatest challenges for mountaineers, pin sharp and with selective color application.
Highlights
The second issue in the “7 Summits” series, which CIT designs for the Cook Islands, features the peak of Mount Everest. Each one of the 777 coins, minted from five ounces of fine silver, displays the terrain of the highest and most famous eight-thousander with selective color application and in breathtaking plasticity.
