New ‘Ultra-High Relief dished’ coin with an extremely low mintage of 650 – definite showstoppers from the British Virgin Islands
The Coin
20th June 2017 marked the 180th Anniversary of Queen Victoria’s Accession to the Throne. To celebrate this milestone, Pobjoy Mint is releasing this Ultra high relief commemorative coin for the British Virgin Islands in Proof Fine Silver.
Pobjoy Mint has struck this coin in our unique ‘Ultra High Relief’ format. The extra relief allows for an unprecedented complexity of design and finish. The obverse features a new effigy design of HM Queen Elizabeth II in exceptional detail.
Young Victoria’s effigy is an incredibly striking image to feature on this $10 coin. The image captures the Queen’s youth, beauty and power making it a must have for any collector. Emphasis has been placed on the detail of the hair as the young Queen changed her childish hairstyle to a mature cut as soon as she acceded to the throne to show independence to her mother.
In order to maintain the exclusivity of this coin we are only minting 650 in Proof Fine Silver each weighing 1oz piedfort with a total weight of 2oz. Produced for British Virgin Islands.
Behind the Coin
Born in 1819 HRH Princess Victoria of Kent was the daughter of German born Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and Prince Edward Duke of Kent and Strathearn. Her Father died shortly after she was born so the young princess was raised in isolation by her oppressive mother and rumored lover Sir John Conroy. Together they devised a set of strict rules known as the ‘Kensington System’ in an attempt to render the Queen-to-be dependent on them. This spectacularly backfired and resulted in Victoria growing to despise both her mother and Conroy. Despite being fifth in line to the throne at birth, a spate of family deaths resulted in her Coronation at Westminster Abbey in 1838 aged just 18.
Alexandrina Victoria became a lady of many titles. In addition to the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland she later adopted the title ‘Empress of India’. Finally she was also known as the ‘Grandmother of Europe’ as her nine children with first cousin Albert married royals throughout Europe. Some very grand titles for a lady not more than five feet tall!
Queen Victoria died in 1901 aged 81 after a rein of 63 years making her the second longest reigning British monarch (After HM Queen Elizabeth II). She was lucky to make it to this age as there were no fewer than six attempts to assassinate the Queen, most of these attempts were by seemingly crazed gun men whilst she was riding in a carriage. The Queen was buried with various mementos of her friends, family and servants including a plaster cast of Albert’s hand, one of his dressing gowns and a lock of her servant John Brown’s hair.
