Niue 2015 Somali Cat 1 Dollar Silver Proof Coin

Description:

The Mint of Poland continues its popular colorized coin series “Man’s Best Friends – Cats” with this .999 silver coin featuring the lithe and graceful Somali cat. This coin is legal tender on the Island of Niue and carries a face value of one New Zealand dollar. The Niue 2015 Somali Cat 1 Dollar Silver Proof is the ninth coin in the series.

Obverse:

The coin’s obverse boasts two distinct finishes. An outer ring is fully brilliant while the coin’s inner ring has a matte finish. In the center is Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Rank-Broadley’s initials IRB are located just beneath the bust truncation. The Mint of Poland’s MW mark (Warsaw Mint) is located to the immediate right of the queen’s neck. Wrapping around the outside of the inner ring, at the 4 o’clock position is information relating to the coin’s metallic content, which is expressed as Ag 999. On the outer ring, wrapping around the entire coin is the following legend and inscriptions: ELIZABETH II, NIUE ISLAND, 1 DOLLAR, 2015. A beaded circle separates this text from the coin’s rim.

Reverse:

A colorized representation of a Somali cat rests against a silver ball of yarn. Swarovski crystals are affixed to the surface of the coin to mimic the tapetum lucidum, a thin reflective layer of tissue behind the retina of cats that gives them night vision. In the background, a silvery silhouette of a Somali cat standing. Wrapping around the inside of the coin’s rim is a circle of cat paw prints. The inscription, printed in lower case, reads: somali cat, lot somalijski (Polish for “somali cat”).

Designer(s): Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on coins from the UK and the Commonwealth since 1999 (View Designer’s Profile). The Polish Mint does not release designer information for their original designs.
