Description:

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (March 6, 1475 – February 18, 1564), known all these centuries later simply by his first name Michelangelo, was a Renaissance artist of the highest order. A reclusive figure by contemporary accounts, Michelangelo took in few students but did manage to take on a number of significant commissions.

On July 31, 2015, the Bank of Russia issued a colorized 25-ruble silver coin honoring Michelangelo. The coin is the latest release of Russia’s “Treasury of World Culture” series and was struck at the Saint Petersburg Mint.

Obverse:

In the center, the two-headed eagle, which is the emblem of the Bank of Russia. Underneath the eagle is the inscription Банк России (Bank of Russia). The eagle is surrounded by a beaded circle. Between the beaded circle and the rim is the following text ДВАДЦАТЬ ПЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ (twenty-five rubles), and 2015 Г[од]. In addition, along the rim of the coin is the coin’s metallic purity, represented as “AG 925″, “155,5” representing the coin’s weight, and the mark of the Saint Petersburg Mint.

Reverse:

The coin’s reverse design combines full-color printed elements and relief images of Michelangelo’s Pietà (centered at the bottom of the design) and Saint Peter’s Cathedral (offset to the center right). In color are two panels from Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel frescos. To the bottom left is a black and white portrait of the artist by Daniele da Volterra (1509-1566). Wrapping around the top of the coin, canted slightly to the right, is the inscription ТВОРЕНИЯ МИКЕЛАНДЖЕЛО БУОНАРРОТИ (Works of Michelangelo Buonarroti).
