To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s book, the Perth Mint has struck a colorized Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Silvered Antique Clock Coin. Bearing a denomination of $2, this .999 fine silver coin is legal tender on the island nation of Tuvalu and is the first working clock coin ever struck.
In the center, the back of a golden watch. A spiraling inscription reads “OH MY EARS AND WHISKERS, HOW LATE IT’S GETTING!” The coin’s outer ring features an antiqued finish. At the top of the design, is Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which sits as if it the 12 o’clock position on a clock. A vegetal wreath surrounds the golden center with roses at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock position. Just inside of the rim are the inscriptions TUVALU 2015, QUEEN ELIZABETH II, and 2 DOLLARS.
Center, a working clock. At the center of the clock a black and white image of a rabbit. The digits on the clock face are drawn in a whimsical font. A golden-plated outer ring frames the clock. Wrapping around it is the inscription OH DEAR! OH DEAR! I SHALL BE LATE! The coin’s silver outer ring has an antiqued finish. Various motifs drawn from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland are depicted: At the top, the Cheshire Cat; at the bottom right, Alice; to the left, playing cards. Vegetal filigree and playing card symbols further embellish the design. The Perth “P” mintmark is located below the clock, offset slightly to the left.
