The Canadian “Loonie” has just celebrated 30 years of service.
When the $1 coin was introduced in 1987, it replaced a $1 Canadian currency note. No small part of its success being due to the fact that $1 notes were withdrawn from circulation upon deposit. Ten years later, inflationary pressures made it logical to introduce a $2 coin. That coin has been dubbed the “Toonie“.
In this episode of the CoinWeek Podcast, Charles Morgan talks to Murray Church, former Director of Public Relations at the Royal Canadian Mint. The two discuss the coin’s launch, how Canadian’s use it in everyday commerce, and what the United States government can learn from the loonie’s success.
