Pobjoy Mint is ‘tickled pink’ to announce the release of the second in a series of coins that feature the wondrous flamingos on behalf of the British Virgin Islands.
Flamingos are a very familiar sight, even if you have never had the privilege of seeing one in real life. These tropical birds have long legs, long curvy necks and, of course, they are pink. A flock of Flamingos can include several hundred birds. They often perform their mating displays together, rather like a synchronized flamingo flamenco! The color pink comes from beta-carotene in the crustaceans and plankton that flamingos eat. Flamingos kept in captivity will actually turn white if their diet is not supplemented with their natural food choices. There are six existing flamingo species recognized by most sources and it is these six species that will feature on this series of coins.
The second coin in the series of six features James’s Flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi). Named after Harry Berkeley James, a British naturalist who studied the bird, the species was thought to have been extinct until a remote population was discovered in 1956. This species has a very long neck and its plumage is very pale pink, with bright crimson carmine streaks around the back. One of the more distinguishable features of this breed is that its bill is bright yellow with a black tip.
The coin itself shows two adult James’s flamingo with one of the birds sifting through the water for food. The coin has been produced in Virenium®, a metal developed by Pobjoy Mint that is light gold in color. The coin is available with both flamingos in full color highlighting their pale pink plumage and yellow bills. The obverse of the coin features the exclusive Pobjoy Mint effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
