Among the many jewels to be offered in the upcoming Stack’s Bowers auction at the ANA World’s Fair of Money in Anaheim is a beautiful 1916 Indian quarter eagle certified MS-65 by PCGS and encapsulated in an old green PCGS holder.
Vibrant honey and saffron color is intermingled with subtle azure on each side of this delightful Gem. Frothy luster floods the recesses, emphasizing the sharp delineation of the devices. Satiny luster blankets the fields, remaining virtually untouched across all but the most vulnerable regions. The lightly cartwheeling surfaces exude flashy radiance under a light source, contributing to the eye appeal of this piece.
With a production figure of just 240,000 pieces, the 1914 quarter eagle is the second rarest issue of the series, behind only the famous 1911-D. While circulated examples are attainable with relatively little effort, in Choice Mint State and above the conditional rarity increases exponentially. PCGS has certified just four pieces finer than the present example, with a single MS-67 the finest seen by that grading service.
