Gold and Cu-Ni Coins Commemorating 100th Anniversary of Last Morgan, First Peace Dollars Now Available

The 1 oz silver bullion coin commemorating the 100th anniversary of the last Morgan and first Peace dollars has already sold out, but The Pobjoy Mint is thrilled to announce that the design to commemorate the centenary of the transition of the Morgan dollar to the Peace dollar is now available in Uncirculated cupro-nickel and Proof fine .999 half-gram gold.

The Morgan Dollar was minted from 1878 to 1904 and then again in 1921. The coin was named after its designer, United States Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan and the obverse depicts a profile portrait representing Liberty. Morgan was born in Birmingham, England where he worked as a die engraver.

The Peace Dollar was minted from 1921 to 1928 and then again in 1934 and 1935. It was designed by Anthony de Francisci as a result of a competition to find designs representing Peace. The design showed the head of the goddess of Liberty in profile.

The design on this brand-new coin shows the two profile images of the portrait representing Liberty and the portrait of the goddess of Liberty representing Peace. The dates 1921 – 2021 are shown beneath the two busts.

In 1876, the US Mint Director began efforts to redesign the US silver dollar. He contacted the Deputy Master of the Royal Mint in London, looking for a die-sinker who would be willing to take the position of Assistant Engraver at the US Mint. George T. Morgan was highly recommended and he began working for the US Mint. In 1917 he became the Chief Engraver until he died in 1925. Therefore, an English engraver, who worked at the British Royal Mint, was behind the design of the most famous silver dollar.

Approved by Buckingham Palace, this coin carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II produced exclusively by Pobjoy Mint.

The Cupro-Nickel coin is presented in a special presentation pack, while the half-gram gold coin is available in a red presentation box with a certificate of authenticity.

  1. I’m a little confused. Is the silver coin a CN or is it a 1 oz silver coin? Is the gold coin a CN layered in a gold plating? And finally, are there 3 coins , a silver one oz, a gold half oz and a CN 1oz gold layered coin? I bought the Silver 1oz coin and hope it’s a 1oz .999 silver coin. Whatever the composition, it’s a great idea this year. With the minting of the 2021 Morgan and Peace dollars, and the release of 2 different designs of the ASE we get a nice collection once in a hundred years!
