Heritage’s February 16-19 Long Beach Expo US Coins Signature Auction will open for bidding very soon! Our Florida U.S. Coins auction saw an increase of nearly 27% in prices realized over the year-ago FUN results, and we fully expect the Long Beach Signature event to continue this positive trend. The total number of lots is up more than 50% from a year ago, including our Premier Session that presents an impressive 551 lots on Thursday evening, February 16. Three floor sessions on Friday include a special Medals & Tokens auction slated for a 10:00 a.m. (Pacific Time) start.
Highlights are spread across numerous series and collector specialties. A strong representation of U.S. Colonials includes several rare issues:
- A 1787 Immunis Columbia copper, AU55 * NGC, Eagle Reverse, one of just four known struck on a broad flan (Ex: Parmelee, Ten Eyck, Newcomer, Green, Newman).
- 1785 Immune Columbia Silver, Nova Constellatio Reverse with Reeded Edge, graded AU53 NGC. CAC.
- The finest-known 1788 Running Fox New Jersey copper, Maris 77-dd, certified MS65 Brown NGC (Ex: Jackman, Green).
Silver type is well-represented, from early issues to later key dates and Mints:
- An attractive 1794 Flowing Hair silver dollar with VF details, the Laurence H. Gardner specimen.
- A 1798 Draped Bust dollar, Pointed 9, Wide Date, B-23, BB-105, MS63 – an always-popular Guide Book variety.
- A 1919-D Standing Liberty quarter, a Registry-grade showpiece, certified MS66 Full Head NGC.
Gold is in strong demand across all denominations. Highlights of the auction include:
- An 1807 Bust Right five dollar certified MS64+ PCGS – the BD-1 Small Stars reverse – second-finest at PCGS.
- An 1869 proof quarter eagle graded PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS, one of only 25 pieces struck and the finest-graded example.
- A 1921 Saint-Gaudens double eagle, an important key date, seldom seen at the present grade of MS62 PCGS.
The special Medals and Tokens session on Friday morning includes new-to-market Selections from the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society as well as an important consignment of Betts medals. Together, these two consignments headline an outstanding medals and tokens offering. Several of the Eric P. Newman tokens are offered in group lots and we encourage bidders to pay close attention. Here is a brief sampling from the session:
- A seldom-seen one-bit token struck in German silver by Dr. Feuchtwanger, presumably on behalf of New York merchant R.E. Russell, with an obverse common to the HT-268 Feuchtwanger cents.
- An (1808) Sansom Medal MS63 Brown NGC, Julian CM-5b, Baker-58A, Greenslet-82, Musante GW-92. This is a splendidly executed bronze U.S. Mint medal engraved by John Reich, with conjoined busts of Washington and Franklin with an impressive eagle reverse.
- A 1677 Franco-Dutch war medal depicting the Dutch fleet burned at Tobago, Betts-56, MS62 PCGS, struck in silver.
- A 1687 Silver Shoals Treasure medal, Betts-67, silver, MS62 PCGS. Ex: Strathtay Collection.
