Inside the Rare Coin Market IN-DEPTH – Episode #1: Plus Grades

CoinWeek and the Coin Dealer Newsletter team up to bring collectors two perspectives on the major factors driving rare coin prices with this episode of the INSIDE the Rare Coin Market IN-Depth.

Inside the Rare Coin Market In-Depth goes beyond the coverage you usually find from other publications to offer deep insights into the factors that are moving the rare coin market and what recent pricing trends mean for some of the most popular modern and classic coins.

Series hosts Charles Morgan and John Feigenbaum are industry veterans and two of the market’s leading experts. Charles Morgan is an award-winning author, podcaster, and is the editor of CoinWeek.com. John Feigenbaum brings decades of coin trading experience as head of David Lawrence Rare Coins (DLRC) to his current position as publisher of the Coin Dealer Newsletter. Under Feigenbaum’s leadership, CDN has been transformed into a modern family of magazine-style publications.

Together, Charles and John will delve into topics that are important to collectors at all levels and provide honest unfiltered insights into the rare coin market that you won’t find anywhere else.

In this episode, CDN publisher John Feigenbaum joins CoinWeek editor Charles Morgan to discuss Plus Grade coins and their impact on the numismatic market.

The Plus designation was adopted by PCGS and NGC in 2010 to denote high-quality coins within the grades XF45 to MS68. At the time of their introductions, Plus Grades were a novel concept, but the application of the attribution was seldom seen and many coins had not been resubmitted for the PLUS upgrade.

Nearly a decade later, this doesn’t seem to be the case.

The two discuss how Plus Grade coins fit in the CDN price guide model and how some Plus Grade coins benefit immensely from Set Registry collecting.

Charles asks John whether the Plus Grade is a transitional grade for PQ coins as they inch up to the next grade step and whether most Plus Grade coins offered on the market have already been looked at by crack-out specialists.
