ModernCoinMart, LLC released the second coin in the MCM exclusive series, Designers of America’s Coins. After gaining approval from the Perth Mint, MCM’s in-house staff artist, Charles D. Daughtrey, took to the drawing board to commemorate the famous Adolph A. Weinman, designer of the Walking Liberty half dollar.
As the second coin in the series, the Weinman coin features 1 oz. of .999 fine silver and pays tribute to an unforgettable artist. This coin debuted worldwide at the 2015 ANA World’s fair of Money in Chicago, Illinois. Weinman was commissioned to work with other artists he knew, such as Augustus Saint-Gaudens and James Earle Fraser, as a part of the so-
called “Renaissance of American Coinage” that occurred between 1907 and 1916.
During this time, he created the Walking Liberty design as well as the popular Winged Liberty or “Mercury” dime design. His Walking Liberty design was later resurrected by the U.S. Mint as the obverse of the most collected modern silver bullion coin in the world, the American Silver Eagle.
The design of this coin portrays Mr. Weinman in a three-quarter front view on the left side of the design. To the right of his portrait is one of his most famous designs, the Walking Liberty half dollar, craftily placed behind his head in a “glass bead” semi-frosted finish to contrast with the heavy frost on the effigy. The logo of the ANA is placed in the design on his left shoulder. The ANA was instrumental in their assistance with the planning and promotion of this coin’s issue.
MCM is now offering these coins in their Original Perth Mint packaging as well as graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The labels on the NGC holders were also designed by Daughtrey and exhibits a portrait of Weinman near the left edge of the label and an image of his Walking Liberty design near the right edge of the label. This label was designed to be used only with coins honoring Weinman or with coins designed by Weinman. Each coin will come with a certificate of authenticity that has been hand-signed by Daughtrey.
Only 1,000 of these special coins commemorating Adolph A. Weinman were minted and then the dies were destroyed. No more coins will be minted for any reason.
