Over 2,000 coins from an impressive hoard of over 7,000 early 18th-century colonial coins, dubbed the New World Hoard, will greet visitors at the Long Beach Coin, Currency, Stamp & Sports Collectibles Expo (LongBeachExpo.com), June 9-11, 2016.
The 1711-D 30 Deniers “Mousquetaire” colonials were made specifically for the New World when their voyage was inexplicably cut short. It wasn’t until 300 years later that the hoard was discovered in England.
The hoard, which consists of 7,083 coins, was discovered under the floorboards of a small shop in Bishop’s Waltham, Hampshire, England between 2008 and 2010. Mystery surrounds the massive hoard of colonials, as the reason behind the hoard’s unlikely hiding place is still unknown.
“This is a real piece of history,” said Long Beach Expo President Cassi East. “These coins were intended for the New World when an unknown agent prevented their voyage. The hoard is a real-life treasure, 300 years in the making, and people will get to see this find firsthand at the Long Beach Expo.”
The 300-year-old coins show little wear, considering they were buried for centuries, and are made of copper. The obverse of each Mousquetaire features large, back-to-back ‘L’s surrounded by fleur-de-lis on either side and directly beneath. The inscription reads, “LVD . XIIII . FR . ET . NAV . REX . 1711.” The reverse depicts the outline of a cross with three triangle-shaped pellets on each end, and fleur-de-lis are positioned in each of the cross’ four angles.
After their discovery, the coins were submitted to the British Museum, then sold to a London coin company, and finally sold to Mid-American Rare Coin Galleries and Texas Numismatic Investments, Inc. in 2012.
“The new world hoard is the largest known discovery of American colonial coins, and it has such an incredible story. We at Texas Numismatic Investments, Inc. and Mid-American Rare Coins are thrilled to be able to share this historic discovery with the attendees of the upcoming Long Beach Expo, and know they will find this buried treasure as intriguing as we do,” said Casey Noxon, president of Texas Numismatic Investments, Inc.
Now, after 300 years of hiding and traveling from England to the United States, these storied coins will be on display in Long Beach for the public to enjoy, courtesy of Mid-American Rare Coin Galleries and Texas Numismatic Investments.
