As the nations of the world begin to honor those who died one hundred years ago in the first World War, the president signed legislation on December 16 that authorizes the US Mint to produce commemorative coins that honor America’s veterans of that conflict.

Representative Doug Lamborn (R-CO5) introduced the original bill (H.R. 2366) on June 13, 2013. It passed the House on December 2, 2014 and the Senate on December 4.

As written, H.R. 2366–otherwise known as the World War I American Veterans Commemorative Coin Act–mandates the production of a maximum of 350,000 silver dollars consisting of 90% pure silver.

Much like the 2012 National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum Commemorative Coin Act, the Act also authorizes a contest to determine the coin’s design. A jury consisting of three members of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) and three members of the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) will be empaneled to select the winning design.

Unlike the Baseball Hall of Fame design contest, the WWI Commemorative Coin Act stipulates that all submissions be accompanied by a plaster model.

The artist whose design is chosen shall receive at least $5,000 from the Secretary of the Treasury.

The price of the coin will include the standard $10 surcharge. All surcharges will go to the United States Foundation for the Commemoration of the World Wars.
