Modern World Coins – Chinstrap Penguin Latest in Series From Pobjoy Mint

Delightful Chinstrap Penguin Second in Series from British Antarctic Territory

  • Second in the series of five new Penguin 50p coins
  • Diamond Finish commemorative coins available for the first time with Die Mark
  • Cupro Nickel Diamond Finish Coloured coin available in a special collector’s album

When most people think about Antarctica the first thing that probably springs to mind is the penguin. The tuxedo-clad birds are one of the most recognizable and loved species living in Antarctica. Pobjoy Mint is therefore pleased to announce the release of the second coin in the new series of five coins featuring the Penguins of Antarctica, which is proving to be exceptionally popular. The second coin in the series of five coins features the Chinstrap penguin.

When penguins walk they waddle, which may look very comical but actually has a rather logical explanation. Studies have found that walking with a swaying motion can lead to an 80% energy saving – which is vital when trying to survive in the coldest place on Earth.

With an estimated population of around eight million pairs and living in colonies of over 100,000 pairs in some islands, the Chinstrap penguin is probably the most abundant penguin in the Antarctic region. Named after the band of dark feathers under the chin, which looks like a strap keeping their hat on, they nest on ice-free slopes where they form a strong pair bond returning each year to the same nesting site with the same partner.

The design on the coin itself features a male and female Chinstrap penguin. The Pobjoy Mint exclusive effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is shown on the obverse of the coin.

The coin is available in Cupro Nickel Diamond Finish with the penguins portrayed in color. A special color album, which is sold separately, has been designed to house all five coins.
