New Numismatic Book Released on the Coins and Tokens of French Indochina

The coinage of French Indochina is the focus of a new bilingual (French/English) hardcover numismatic book just issued by Editions Victor Gadoury of Monaco. Monnaies et Jetons de l’Indochine Française (Coins and Jetons of French Indochina)  by Jean Lecompte, brings an updated focus on this now very popular area of collecting.

indochina_bookIts 168 pages of bilingual (French/English) text list 800 coins with over 700 color illustrations. Among the subjects included are the coins struck by the French colonial authorities in the Protectorate of Annam (now Viet Nam); Vietnamese “KIM-THANH” pure gold strips; French Cochin China; The local issues of the French concessions in China — Canton, Fuzhou, Hankeou, Kwang-Chou-Wan, Shanghai, and Tien-Tsin; the extensive and widely collected coinage of French Indochina; and finally the coins of Laos, Siam, Tonkin, and Viet Nam.

Author Jean Lecompte is a life member of the ANS, ANA, and SNA (Societé de Numismatique Asiatique). He has been collecting since 1980 with a specialization in colonial coinages, to which he was originally attracted because of both their history and the fact that they were not a familiar as some other coinages. Today, his collection of French colonial coins alone numbers some 6,000 pieces. He often discusses French Colonial coinage at conferences in France and Switzerland. He also serves as an independent third party expert on the subject.

The numismatic book costs $69.50. Sample pages may be previewed at www.coin-currency.com, where it can also be ordered online. Mail orders should be sent to the Coin & Currency Institute, P.O. Box 399, Williston, Vermont 05495.  Add $5.75 to each order for shipping and handling in the United States. Major credit cards are accepted. Call toll-free 1-800-421-1866. Fax (802) 536-4787.
