New PCGS VP Excited About Modern Coins and Planned 2016 U.S. Mint Commem Program

The United States Mint’s plans for creation of gold coins in 2016 based on classic silver coin designs issued a century earlier could spark a resurgence in the popularity of modern commemoratives, according to Mark Stephenson, Vice President of Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com).

Mark Stephenson, PCGS Vice President and Director of Bulk Services.

“2016 is looking like it will be a bounce back year for modern coins. The U.S. Mint’s 2016 releases, like the gold renditions of three classic 1916 designs, have me excited about the year’s prospects. PCGS is already developing a full suite of attractive labels for these coins that both dealers and collectors will love,” said Stephenson who was recently appointed PCGS Vice President and Director of Bulk Services.

In early November, the United States Mint announced it will strike coins to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Winged Liberty (“Mercury”) dime, Standing Liberty quarter-dollar and Walking Liberty half-dollar. The “dime” will contain one-tenth troy ounce of gold; the “quarter-dollar” one-quarter ounce; and the “half-dollar” one-half ounce.

All three coins will be struck in .9999 fine, 24-karat gold.

The New Year will also mark two other important numismatic anniversaries.

“It will be the 30th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle bullion coins and the 30th anniversary for PCGS in 2016. We intend to commemorate both occasions in a classic way that will excite the hobby.  PCGS’ innovative label designs and secure holder paired with the beautiful American Silver Eagle make a great combination,” stated Stephenson.

Prior to his appointment as Vice President, Stephenson served as the company’s Director of Customer Relations, and earlier he managed a successful rare coin dealership.
