New PNG President Dana Samuelson Working To Promote Growth of Hobby And Marketplace

Dana Samuelson, President of American Gold Exchange in Austin, Texas, has been selected as the 2015 – 2017 President of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG; www.pngdealers.org). Founded in 1953, the nonprofit PNG is composed of many of the country’s top rare coin and paper money dealers who pledge to follow a strict code of ethics (www.pngdealers.org/png-code-of-ethics) in the buying and selling of numismatic merchandise.

“It is an honor to be elected President of the PNG. The PNG membership is comprised of the finest professional numismatists in the country whose knowledge and integrity is unsurpassed. And it’s a bonus that these people are not only very talented and hardworking, but also a lot of fun to be with,” said Samuelson.

“As President, I look forward to continuing the initiatives we’ve begun in the last several years like the successful PNG internship program and PNG trade shows,” he added.

“I also look forward to working with the new American Numismatic Association (ANA) President Jeff Garrett, who is a PNG Past President (2005 – 2007), to strengthen the bond between our two organizations of collectors and dealers. And, of course, the PNG will continue to assist and work closely with the International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN) and the Industry Council for Tangible Assets (ICTA). As our profession’s lobbying group, ICTA keeps an eye on both state and national legislative issues that are important to buyers and sellers of rare coins and precious metals,” Samuelson stated.

Barry Stuppler of Barry Stuppler & Co. in Woodland Hills, California is the new PNG Vice President; Richard Weaver of Delaware Valley Rare Coin in Broomall, Pennsylvania is Treasurer; and James Simek of NumisGraphic Enterprises in Westchester, Illinois is Secretary.

“Under PNG Bylaws, member-dealers of the organization elect the board members at large, and then the elected board members select the officers from within their group. During their August 9, 2015 meeting in Rosemont, Illinois, the nine-member Board chose the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer,” explained Robert Brueggeman, PNG Executive Director.

The 2015 – 2017 PNG Board of Directors also is composed of Immediate Past President Terry Hanlon of Dillon Gage Metals Division in Addison, Texas; John Hamrick of John B. Hamrick & Co. in Alpharetta, Georgia; John Maben of JFM Trading in Lakewood Ranch, Florida; Wade Milas of RARCOA in Willowbrook, Illinois; and James Sego of JMS Coins in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

“The election of Wade Milas to the board marks the first time that the son of a former PNG President has been selected as a PNG officer. Wade’s late father, Ed Milas, served with distinction as PNG President from 1983 to 1985,” explained Brueggeman.

Samuelson is optimistic about the numismatic marketplace. “Going forward it will be exciting to watch how the rare coin market continues to evolve in the 21st century. The just-concluded ANA Chicago convention was another successful show for dealers, the public and the auction houses, with interest and prices continuing to be strong for marquis rare coins,” he said.

“Seeing again in person former Trompeter Collection proof gold coins and watching them come up for auction with other rarities like the 1861-S Paquet $20 out of the Duquesne Collection were highlights for me personally. We have more of the phenomenal D. Brent Pogue Collection coins coming up for auction later this year.

“Opportunities to acquire incredible coins like these don’t happen all the time, so I hope collectors and dealers alike are taking advantage of the chance to see and buy these wonderful coins coming to market again,” stated Samuelson.
