Uncertified coins and banknotes on one of the world’s largest and most vibrant marketplaces will have a link to purchase a preliminary review by NGC and PMG experts
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®), together with Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®), have partnered with eBay to launch NGC/PMG Expert Review, a low-cost service that provides a preliminary review of coins or banknotes by NGC and PMG experts. The service is available for coins and notes on eBay that have not been certified by a third-party grading service.
NGC is one of the world’s largest third-party authentication and grading services for collectible coins, tokens, and medals. PMG is one of the world’s largest third-party paper money grading and encapsulation services. Both are approved grading companies of eBay, a leading online marketplace that connects buyers and sellers around the world.
NGC Expert Review offers two services for US, world and ancient coins on eBay:
- Authenticity Review ($5 per coin): An NGC expert examines the photos from the eBay listing and provides a preliminary opinion of the coin’s authenticity. The preliminary opinions of authenticity are: Likely Genuine, Likely Not Genuine or Inconclusive.
- Authenticity and Grade Review ($10 per coin): An NGC expert examines the photos from the eBay listing and provides a preliminary opinion of the coin’s authenticity and, if it is Likely Genuine, a preliminary opinion on its grade range. For US and world coins, the preliminary opinions of grade range include Likely Low Circulated (1-35), Likely High Circulated (40-58), Likely Uncirculated (60-70), Likely Proof (60-70) or Inconclusive. Similar opinions are given for ancient coins.
PMG Expert Review offers two services for US and world paper money on eBay:
- Authenticity Review ($5 per note): A PMG expert examines the photos from the eBay listing and provides a preliminary opinion of the note’s authenticity. The preliminary opinions of authenticity are: Likely Genuine, Likely Not Genuine or Inconclusive.
- Authenticity and Grade Review ($10 per note): A PMG expert examines the photos from the eBay listing and provides a preliminary opinion of the note’s authenticity and, if it is Likely Genuine, a preliminary opinion on its grade range. The preliminary opinions of grade range include Likely Low Circulated (1-35), Likely High Circulated (40-58), Likely Uncirculated (60-70), Likely No Grade and Inconclusive.
Both NGC and PMG will provide the results within two business days. An authenticity opinion of Inconclusive will result in a full refund. A grade of Inconclusive will result in a $5 refund.
To use this service, eBay buyers should look for the NGC/PMG Expert Review link near the bid or buy section on the eBay listing page for an uncertified coin.
As an added benefit, NGC and PMG will give the person who purchased the Expert Review service a voucher toward NGC or PMG’s full authentication, grading and encapsulation services. The voucher is equal to the amount paid for the review and is valid for 90 days from the date the Expert Review service was purchased. An Associate or higher Collector membership is required to submit collectibles to NGC and PMG for their regular grading services.
