NLG PLANS BIG CONVENTION EVENTS

If it’s Thursday, it must be NLG Day at the World’s Fair of Money.

The Numismatic Literary Guild has big doings planned on Thursday, Aug. 7, at the national coin show in Rosemont, Illinois.

At 10 a.m., the Guild will hold its annual Symposium in Room 10 of the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center – and this year’s program figures to be one of the most interesting ever.

nlg2It will bring together three revered professional numismatists with a total of more than 150 years in the coin business – Q. David Bowers, Harvey Stack and Larry Stack. These three legendary dealers – fittingly billed as “The Great Ones” – will discuss long-term trends in numismatic literature and journalism, drawing from their wealth of observations as well as their personal involvement in writing books, articles and auction catalogs. Spectrum Group CEO Greg Roberts will participate at the symposium and offer the modern day perspective.

Christine Karstedt, executive vice president of Stack’s Bowers, will serve as moderator for the all-star panel.

At 8 Thursday evening, the NLG will stage its annual Bash in Ballrooms AB of the Hyatt Regency O’Hare, the main convention hotel. As usual, the Bash – a highlight of ANA conventions for 45 years – will feature a sumptuous hot buffet, skits and satirical songs and the presentation of award plaques to winners in the Guild’s yearly Writer’s Competition.

Tickets to the Bash cost just $10 apiece and attendance is open to all. Membership in the Guild is not a requirement. Tickets can be purchased beforehand, on the bourse floor, from Ed Reiter or Maurice Rosen or at the entrance to the ballrooms on the evening of the Bash.

This year’s Bash will have twin highlights: the presentation of both the Clemy, the Guild’s highest honor, and the Burnett Anderson Memorial Award.
