Bidding is now open for Heritage’s 2011 March Sacramento Signature ANA US Coin Auction, to be held in conjunction with the National Money show in Sacramento, CA, March 17-20. As you’ve certainly come to expect from Heritage auctions, there is something in the offerings for every collector.
This auction features an especially strong offering of early silver material. Perhaps the highlight is lot 4410, a 1796 half dollar graded AU58 by PCGS. Half dollars combining the draped bust obverse and the small eagle reverse were minted only in 1796 and 1797 to the tune of fewer than 4,000 total coins, rendering any appearance of a 1796-dated half a cause for collector excitement. The near-Mint State specimen in this auction will undoubtedly find its way into an outstanding type set. To further whet the appetites of collectors, they are offering a second coin of the same date graded Fine-15.
Another well-known coin in high demand from type collectors is the 1796 quarter. This one-year type is, like the half dollar of the same year, subject to heavy demand from type collectors, and Heritage is also privileged to offer two examples of this coin in this auction. The finest is an MS64-graded beauty with an outstanding strike and semi-prooflike surfaces, estimated at $100,000. If this is outside your budget, the VG10 example from The Dustinn (Dusty) Lee Gibson Collection is much more affordable, although by no means inexpensive, and would be a centerpiece in many an outstanding collection.
1806 quarters are not rare as a date or as a type, and the B-9 variety may be the single most common variety in the entire Draped Bust series. However, the 1806 B-9 quarter in this auction is the single finest certified example of the date and one of perhaps a half-dozen in the type with a claim to such quality. Pedigreed to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr, and graded MS66, it boasts all of the quality collectors have come to expect from the outstanding coins that resided in that collection.
