Canadian Banknote Highlights from the Stacks Bowers NYINC World Currency Auction

Below are select highlights from the Stack’s Bowers World Currency Auction taking place at the New York International Convention (NYINC) on January 12, 2018

CANADA. Banque du Canada. 100 Dollars, 1935. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.

French Text. Osborne-Towers. A very elusive design, printed by the Canadian Bank Note Company, and one of only two pieces for the catalog number certified as uncirculated by PMG. Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester pictured at left in a striking portrait. A muted brown hue serving as the touch of color on the face of the note outside the red serial numbers, and blue security dots. The reverse shows an all brown design with a seated figure at center with a standing child next to him. This vignette is meant to represent commerce. A very negligible spot on the bottom right margin, away from the design, likely the cause of the note not receiving an EPQ designation.

Estimate: $25,000 – $35,000.
LOT # 30102
PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.

CANADA. Union Bank of Canada. 50 Dollars, 1912 PMG Very Fine 25.

CH# 7301808. Winnipeg, Manitoba. This is a special offering, and the first time we have been able to offer this example. This 1912 50 Dollar note shows with ‘Juanita’, a desirable vignette, at left holding a feather over her head. The right side pictures a vignette of the Quebec Citadel. A green hue permeates from the center of the note. The reverse shows an entirely green design with the Greek Key playing a big factor in connecting the 50 obligations that are protected by detailed lathework. Some flowers also show at the top left and bottom right of the back design, opposite of the obligations. The back design also shows a cornice with the bank name ‘Union Bank of Canada‘ at center. Outside of some minimal handling that accounts for the grade, there are no issues to report. We cannot locate this note on the PMG population report, leading us to believe it is the only example known, and by proxy, the finest for the type.

Estimate: $15,000 – $25,000.

CANADA. Banque du Canada. 2 Dollars, 1935.  PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.

French Text. Printed by BABN. This scarce piece is the first of two scarce Banque du Canada Gems with Serial Number 9 that we are offering in this sale. This note shows with lathework throughout the design, and a soft blue hue. Queen Mary is pictured at left. Plated signatures of Osborne-Towers in the signature panels. The reverse shows an entirely blue design with Mercury pictured at center with trains and boats in the background representing ‘Transportation.’ This is one of only seven gems on the PMG population report for the type in issued form. A rare opportunity for seasoned collectors.

Estimate: $10,000 – $15,000.

CANADA. Banque du Canada. 5 Dollars, 1935. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.

French Text. Printed by BABN. Osborne-Towers Plate signed. A very special offering, and the higher denomination of two of these 1935 Serial Number 9 Gem Banque du Canada pieces. Prince Edward of Wales imaged at left. An orange hue radiates from the center outward. The reverse shows an allegorical man seated at center who is supposed to represent ‘Electric Power’ with a mountain scene behind him. The color on the reverse is all orange. This pieces is one of only four gems on the PMG census with none finer.

Estimate: $10,000 – $15,000.
LOT # 30096
PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.

CANADA. Bank of Canada. 25 Dollars, 1935. BC-11. PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58 EPQ.

English Text. A fantastic representation of this Commemorative issue which honored the Silver Jubilee of the reign of King George V. The note shows dual portraits and an English bank title. The back shows a highly detailed vignette of Windsor Castle in pleasing purple inks. Nice centering and margins are welcomed and frame the design quite nicely. Strictly original paper is observed through the encapsulation surface and it seems only a center bends prevents an Uncirculated grade. Surely one of the most pleasing circulated examples to come to market.

Estimate: $8,000 – $12,000.
