Israel Releases New 200 NIS Banknote

The Bank of Israel calls on the public to get to know the new banknote and its security features, via publicity pamphlets, the website, and the “New Banknotes” mobile application.

By Bank of Israel….
On December 23, 2015 (11 Shvat 5776), the new NIS 200 banknote–the second in the new series of banknotes (Series C of the New Shekel)–bearing the portrait of poet Nathan Alterman, entered circulation. The new banknote is being distributed to the public through commercial bank tellers, automated teller machines, and Israel Postal Company branches.

The banknotes in the new series have advanced standards of security, innovation and accessibility. The denominations differ in color and length, and incorporate a range of leading edge anti-counterfeiting security features, produced through various technologies. In addition, the new banknotes include designated features to aid the blind and vision impaired.

The NIS 200 banknotes currently in use, bearing the portrait of former President Zalman Shazar (Series B of the New Shekel) will continue to be legal tender for several years, and will remain in circulation in parallel with the new banknotes. As the process of replacing the banknotes is gradual, the public does not need to take any action to replace the banknotes at this stage. Later on, the Bank of Israel will publish guidelines for replacing the banknotes from Series B.

As the replacement of a series of banknotes takes place once in several years, preparation is required ahead of, and during, the new banknote entering circulation. Therefore, with the aim of increasing awareness of the entry of the new banknote into circulation, and the public’s recognition of the security features incorporated into it, the Bank of Israel recently embarked on a public information campaign using a range of media and accessible to various populations. Among other things, announcements and information pamphlets in five languages have been distributed via commercial bank branches, the Israel Postal Company branches, and various commercial and public bodies.

The Bank of Israel invites the public to get to know the new banknote, its characteristics and particularly the advanced security features incorporated in it, through the website www.newbanknotes.org.il, the “New Banknotes” mobile application, and via the information pamphlets, announcements in the media, and at the telephone call center at 1-800-300-018.
