American Numismatic Association Announces 2014 HonoreesOn Monday, the American Numismatic Association announced the recipients of several of the Association’s most prestigious awards. Each of these individuals will be recognized for their exemplary service to the ANA and to numismatics at a special Awards Banquet to be held at the upcoming World’s Fair of Money.

Ron Guth named 2014 Numismatist of the Year

Life Member to be recognized at Awards Banquet…

Ron Guth, a scholar, author, collector, and volunteer, is the American Numismatic Association’s 2014 Numismatist of the Year.

He will be presented with the award during the Awards Banquet on Aug. 8 at the Chicago World’s Fair of Money in Rosemont, Illinois. Guth has authored numerous books furthering the hobby.

Some of his most notable publications are: Auction Prices Realized for Certified German Coins, 2nd Edition  (2013); with Jeff Garrett, Auction Prices Realized for PCGS-graded German Coins, 2nd Edition (2011); 100 Greatest U.S. Coins, 3rd Edition (2008); with Neil S. Berman, Coin Collecting for Dummies, 2nd Edition (2008); and with Jeff Garrett, Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933, 2nd Edition (2008).

“Numismatics is a school where one can learn about people, history, geography, economics, politics and related subjects simply by studying the coins themselves,” Guth said. “I am particularly fascinated by this educational component of coin collecting because it brings these subjects to life.”

guthGuth is a life member of the ANA as well as a member of the Civil War Token Society, Florida United Numismatics, Early American Coppers Club, American Numismatic Society, Colonial Coin Collectors Club, John Reich Society and Numismatic Association of Southern California. He is currently the president of PCGS CoinFacts and in the past was president of the Professional Coin Grading Service (NASDAQ:CLCT) and founder and president of CoinFacts, Inc.

Throughout his literary career, Guth has received numerous awards.

His work has been recognized multiple times by the Numismatic Literary Guild with awards for Best U.S. Coin Book, 2006; Best Investment Book, 2003; Book of the Year, 2003; Best All-Around Portfolio, 2003; Extraordinary Merit, 2002; and Best Software, 2001.

Guth has also received the ANA’s Presidential Award (2006), Glenn Smedley Award (2006), Olga & Wayte Raymond Award (1982) and Heath Literary Award (1982).

Piret named 2014 Elvira Clain-Stefanelli Memorial Award winner

Award honors women who have made significant contributions to numismatics… piret1

Diane Piret will be recognized as the 2014 recipient of the American Numismatic Association’s Elvira Clain-Stefanelli Memorial Award for Achievement in Numismatics on Aug. 8, during the Awards Banquet at the Chicago World’s Fair of Money in Rosemont, Illinois.

The Elvira Clain-Stefanelli Memorial Award for Achievement in Numismatics was established and first given in 2013 to Elvira Clain-Stefanelli and honors women who have made significant contributions to numismatics.

These contributions, whether in research, leadership, or mentorship, must have made a lasting impact on the numismatic community and demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the betterment of numismatics.

“I’m extremely honored and humbled to be the recipient of this award.” Piret said. “It’s very special.”

Piret has been working professionally in numismatics for more than 40 years. Her experience spans from small-town shops to international trading of the industry’s major market makers. Piret is currently the industry affairs director at the Industry Council for Tangible Assets and has been working there since 1989.

Lee Minshull named 2014 Harry J. Forman Dealer of the Year

Lee Minshull will receive the Harry J. Forman Dealer of the Year Award for his outstanding contributions to the numismatic community during the Kickoff Event at the World’s Fair of Money on Tuesday, Aug. 5 in Rosemont, Illinois.

minshullThe award is given to an ANA-member dealer who shows uncommon dedication to strengthening the hobby and the ANA and displays exemplary ethical standards as a numismatic dealer. Minshull has been a collector since he was 11, a Life Member of the ANA since 1973, and is a past ANA Young Numismatist of the Year.

His dedication to the Association started at a young age when he asked former ANA Executive Vice President Ed Rochette if he could work as an intern. He worked in several departments and gained valuable experience and knowledge that would benefit him in the years to come.

Following his internship with the ANA, Minshull worked at Steve Ivy Rare Coin Company, Heritage Rare Coin Galleries and Kevin Lipton Rare Coins. Currently, he is the director of California C7B Merchants Association and he is a member of ICTA and a life member of PNG, CSNS, MSNS and FUN.

Each year, Minshull donates a one-ounce gold eagle coin to the ANA’s Outstanding Young Numismatist of the Year, a deed that is not only generous but is encouraging to all young collectors.

Minshull was instrumental in raising funds to launch the Robert Lecce Advanced Scholarship Program, which provides merit-based financial aid to Summer Seminar students. In addition to his many contributions to the ANA, Minshull has raised close to $3 million for the World Trade Center Memorial Fund by selling recovered coins that have been certified by PCGS.

Longtime numismatist Gene Hessler will be honored with the American Numismatic Association’s 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award

Hessler’s many numismatic accomplishments include Curator of the Chase Manhattan Bank Money Museum, 1967-1977 and Curator of the Mercantile Bank Money Museum (Eric Newman Collection), 1986-1989.

hesslerHe discovered and published several previously unknown designs for U.S. currency through research at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and the Smithsonian Institution.

Hessler also won the Howland Wood Award at the ANA’s Centennial Convention in 1991, for his exhibit of the complete works of Czech banknote designer Max Svabinsky.

Hessler has been a member of the ANA since 1967. He also has held memberships with the American Numismatic Society (elected Fellow c.1973); Cincinnati Numismatic Association, board member 2005-present; Essay Proof Society (defunct), vice president 1987-1993, director 1987-93; International Bank Note Society, director in the 1980s; and Society of Paper Money Collectors, board member 1980s-90s. Hessler taught at the ANA Summer Seminar from 2000-04.

As part of the “Money Talks” series on National Public Radio (NPR), one of his scripts was selected to represent the ANA’s nomination for a Peabody Broadcasting Award in 1993.

Throughout his numismatic career, Hessler has won numerous ANA awards including the Heath Literary Award (1983), Glen Smedley Memorial Award (1993), Medal of Merit (1995), Presidential Award (1998), ANA Honorary Life Member (1990).

Other awards include Professional Numismatists Guild Outstanding Achievement Award (1994), International Bank Note Society Silver Medal for Service (2001), Middle Atlantic Numismatic Association Numismatist of the Year (2001), and Numismatic Literary Guild Clemy (2007).

Neil Shafer awarded 2014 Farran Zerbe Memorial Award

Longtime member to be presented with highest honor given by the ANA… shafer

Hall of Fame numismatist Neil Shafer will be presented with the American Numismatic Association’s highest honor, the 2014 Farran Zerbe Memorial Award, on Aug. 8 during the Awards Banquet at the Chicago World’s Fair of Money in Rosemont, Illinois.

The Farran Zerbe Memorial Award is the highest honor conferred by the ANA and is given in recognition of numerous years of outstanding, dedicated service to numismatics.

“I am very pleased and honored to be given this prestigious award,” Shafer said. “Having been an ANA member for over 60 years, I have tried to contribute to the numismatic hobby in a meaningful way, and it is gratifying to know that my work has been appreciated.”

Shafer’s tireless dedication to the hobby includes being an instructor at Summer Seminar and authoring numismatic articles for major publications.

He has also been a coin club officer and exhibited and judged at numerous conventions, including ANA shows, Central States and FUN. Shafer’s work with Young Numismatist and Scout programs has helped to ensure the hobby is passed on to new generations.

Shafer has won many awards for his contributions to the hobby, some of which include the ANA’s Medal of Merit (1990), Adult Advisor of the Year (1993), Presidential Award (1996), Lifetime Achievement Award (2007).

Other awards he has won are the Numismatic Literary Guild Clemmy Award (2004), and the Central States Numismatic Society Elston G. Bradfield Writer’s Award (1989).

In 2008, he was enshrined in the Numismatic Hall of Fame. He is a founding member of the Milwaukee Midwest Chapter of the IBNS and is also a member of the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society as well as a number of other numismatic clubs.

Notable Numismatists honored with service awards

Michael Ray Fuljenz and C. Frederick Schwan will be awarded the Medal of Merit, which is presented to honor individuals who have dedicated numerous years of service to the association and promotion of the hobby. Fuljenz has been honored for his years of support of the ANA and his contributions and achievements in the field of numismatics. Schwan has worked extensively in the field of military and emergency money.

The Glenn Smedley Memorial Award was created in memory of Glenn B. Smedley to recognize individuals who have devoted their efforts to the betterment of the American Numismatic Association.

anaThe 2014 honorees are: Halbert Carmichael, who served as a national publicity chairman, exhibit chairman, exhibit judge, assistant chief judge and chair of ANA Exhibits and Awards Committee; David Crenshaw, a longtime volunteer for ANA member clubs and hobby organizations including the Georgia Numismatic Association; Clark W. Fogg, a Summer Seminar instructor and numismatic photographer; Eric Holcomb, an ANA district delegate, regional representative and editor of MintMark; and Simcha L. Kuritzky, a member of several ANA committees as well as a district and regional representative.

Richard Jozefiak will be awarded the Adna G. Wilde Jr. Memorial Award for Excellence for his extensive work in numismatics, including numerous educational articles and presentations as well as an instructor at the 2013 ANA Summer Seminar. The award is named in honor of Lt. Col. (Ret.) and ANA Past President Adna G. Wilde Jr. and is awarded to an ANA member who dedicates his or her time and resources to strengthen the hobby, further the educational mission of the ANA and set an example for others to follow.

The Numismatic Art Award for Excellence in Medallic Sculpture will be awarded to Ron Dutton. This award honors an artist whose cumulative lifetime achievements in the field of medallic sculpture has been of the highest order.

Dorothy C. Baber will be awarded the Exemplary Service Award for her countless hours volunteering for the hobby. The award recognizes an individual or entity (club, corporation, firm or association) who has performed services on behalf of the ANA that are “above and beyond” the call.
