An eye-opening range of historic coin and paper money treasures is guaranteed to thrill visitors at the American Numismatic Association (ANA) 2016 World’s Fair of Money® in Anaheim, Calif., August 9-13. Attendees also can get discounted admission tickets to Disneyland, which is located across the street from the Anaheim Convention Center, site of the event.
“Because of the once-in-a-life opportunity for many collectors and the public to see so many numismatic rarities in one place and at one time, we are strongly encouraging people to make their Southern California hotel and transportation arrangements now,” said ANA Executive Director Kim Kiick.
“Collectors and dealers also should feel free to bring the entire family to this year’s World’s Fair of Money because Disneyland is offering discounted admission tickets for show attendees,” Kiick added. “However, the tickets must be ordered in advance online. A link to ordering the tickets is on the World’s Fair of Money website along with information about nearby hotels.”
The ANA Money Museum has planned a diverse series of educational displays in the popular Museum Showcase area at the Anaheim gathering.
“Historic numismatic items exhibited will range from ancient Greek to Colonial American to California Gold Rush and U.S. Double Eagle gold coins,” said ANA Museum Curator Douglas Mudd. “And Banco de Mexico will also have a special exhibit of captured bank notes.”
Museum Showcase highlights include:
- Four Dekadrachms of Syracuse designed by two of the most famous coin engravers of the ancient world, Kimon and Euainetos. These superbly crafted showpieces are considered to be among the most beautiful coins ever produced.
- 1690 Massachusetts 20 Shillings denomination note. This is a rare example of the first government-issued paper money of Western civilization.
- “The King of U.S. Coins,” an extremely rare 1804 Draped Bust U.S. silver dollar (Class III, Idler/Bebee specimen) insured for $4 million.
- A set of Type I (1850-1866) Double Eagle $20 gold coins displayed courtesy of Monaco Rare Coins.
- Examples of some of the rare California National Bank Notes from the Bebee Collection, including elusive National Gold Bank Notes.
- The world famous McDermott/Bebee specimen 1913 Liberty Head nickel, one of only five such coins known.
- Numismatic trench art of World War I showcasing coins that were made into souvenirs. This exhibit is part of the ANA’s multi-year numismatic salute to mark the centennial of “the War to End All Wars” (1914-1918).
- A display from Banco de Mexico, not previously seen in the United States, of some of the 60,000 Mexican bank notes seized by the United States from Victoriano Huerta’s forces during the 1914 occupation of Veracruz and subsequently returned to Mexico. The stash included rare and previously unknown Mexican notes.
The United States Mint and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) will have displays, including the always-popular BEP Billion Dollar Display that features high denomination notes.
More than 1,000 dealers from across the country and around the world will be buying and selling coins, paper money, tokens and medals, and many of the experts will provide free, informal appraisals of the public’s old coins and currency.
Dozens of coin club meetings and educational seminars also will be held during the convention.
Admission to the 2016 Anaheim World’s Fair of Money is free to ANA members. Admission for non-members is $8 for adults; children 12 and under are admitted free. Admission discount coupons are available online.
