Penultimate coin in the series of five British Antarctic Territory Penguin 50p coins
- Diamond Finish commemorative coins available with Die Mark
- Cupro Nickel Diamond Finish Colored coin available in a special collector’s album
Penguins cope very well in the cold which is why they are very much at home in the Antarctic, especially as some of them breed in the coldest conditions on the planet. Their short outer feathers overlap each other, much like the tiles on a roof, which forms a thick, waterproof layer. Underneath are fluffier feathers which provide warmth. As a rule, the larger the penguin is, the easier it is for it to conserve heat. It is hard to believe that some breeds are so good at keeping warm that they do sometimes encounter the problem of overheating during the summer.
Pobjoy Mint is therefore excited to announce the release of the fourth coin in the series of five coins featuring the Penguins of Antarctica, which continues to be exceptionally popular with collectors and penguin lovers alike. The penultimate coin in the series of five coins features the Gentoo penguin.
The Gentoo penguin is easily recognizable by the wide white stripe, which extends across its head like a bonnet. No one knows where the name ‘Gentoo’ comes from but they do live up to their Latin name Pygoscelis, which means brush-tailed. The Gentoo has the most prominent tail of all penguins which sticks out behind and sweeps from side to side as they walk. The third largest species of penguin, the Gentoo is the fastest underwater swimmer of all the penguins and can actually reach speeds of up to 22 mph/36 kph. In the Antarctic, Gentoo penguins can be found close to the British Antarctic Survey research stations.
The design on the coin itself features a male and female Gentoo penguin. The Pobjoy Mint exclusive effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is shown on the obverse of the coin. The coin is available in Cupro Nickel Diamond Finish with the penguins portrayed in color. A special color album, which is sold separately, has been designed to house all five coins.
