The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has issued a new high-value commemorative note printed on polymer substrate. The new 5,000 Rufiyaa has been designed by local designer Abdullah Nashaath and was printed on Safeguard® by De La Rue, in close association with the MMA.
This commemorative note is issued to mark the 50th Anniversary of independence of Maldives. It depicts 50 years of development and the peaceful approach taken by the country in obtaining independence.
As previously reported in May, the MMA is going to issue a whole new series of notes on De La Rue’s polymer substrate. This includes circulating denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 from October onwards. The existing five-Rufiyaa will be converted to coin and the 1,000-Rufiyaa is a new high value at the top of the denominational scale.
The new note series from Maldives is named “Ran Dhihafaheh” and will be launched in October this year so as to enter circulation before the end of the year. The new note series will represent a radical departure in design from the previous notes.
At the time of publication, one Maldivian Rufiyaa (Rf 1) trades for approximately $0.07 USD.
